This sucks. My old high school is being used for all of the evacuees. The flames light up the sky at night.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency today as a wildfire destroyed at least 100 homes in the celebrity enclave of Montecito and forced about 4,500 residents to flee.

The blaze began at 5:50 p.m. local time yesterday in the Los Padres National Forest, burning more than 1,500 acres. More than 1,100 firefighters have been deployed and 1,500 homes are threatened, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as Cal Fire.

“This continues to be a dangerous fire and residents should remain aware of local conditions and be prepared to respond to any warnings,” the Santa Barbara County Fire Department said in a statement. Thirteen people were injured, the Associated Press reported.

Crazy! Tragic!

California does have amazing resources though. I remember when the Northern edge of the valley was on fire we had firefighters from way up in Northern California here helping us. I mapquested the city and it was like 500 miles away.

Often firefighter units from all over the west coast. I think last time the fires got bad they came from as far as Idaho and Montana....and imagine they are gearing up to come help again, if they aren't on their way already.

AS of this evening, there are 1,141 firefighters on the scene from around the state.

BTW, I am amazed how Oprah almost (if she didn't) losing her home was all over the news. It could be a multi-million dollar home...it's not like she realyl has to sweat at the loss, other than personal items of hers. Sure the cost of the place is kinda like pocket change to her. Plus, I am sure she has the place insured the best it can be.

How about the news talk about real families who can't necessarily afford good insurance and are out of a home now.

Neighbors must help Neighbors. Our aerial equipment is rented from Canada since they have a different fire season.

I know Greece received help from neighboring EU countries when they had bad forest fires a couple years ago.

He stated in his show earlier that his house was safe and miles away from the fire!

When there was the nationwide firestorm in 2000 (in which 7.4 million acres burned nationwide...well over two times the number that usualyl burns, 3.1 million/year), countries from around the world sent peope and resources. I know Australia was one of them. There were a few others, though.

Hopefully the winds stay down and they can keep containment. The evacuation warning zone is only 10 blocks from my house!
