Working in Spain / Greece - NIE Number?

Asking for a friend of mine...
He's going to work in Spain (Ibiza during the summer), but other places too. He's getting conflicting information on whether or not he needs an NIE number.
He's an American citizen w/ American passport
He's going to be looking for bartending/barback work: not PR/promotions/flyer work
Doesn't care if gets paid under the table or not (but you can infer what would be better for him :D)
I don't know if he'll be entering on a tourist visa or just entering for less than 90 days (but I can find out if it makes a difference)
He'll be leaving Spain/Greece after September/October (off to Japan)
Is there a similar process for working in Greece?
Any help will be appreciated! |

| he can easily find a job during summer at one of the greek islands and work without the need of any paper work , as long as if someone suspicious comes and asks him if he works there then he just have to say "no,im just helping tonight my buddy whos the owner coz his main guy got sick" :clown: |
