Here is how to increase the Folder speed on xp and vista systems, Faster browsing and clicking through folders by 2 simple run commands.
No installation of software needed!
simply run these 2 commands in "Run". (Click "Start" -> "Run")
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disabling the Last Access Time improves the speed of folder and file access.
Instructions - Go to "Start", "Run", and Type: fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1
- This can affect programs such as backup and Remote Storage that rely on this feature.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The creation of 8.3 filenames and directories for all long filenames and directories on NTFS partitions may decrease directory enumeration performance.
Instructions - Go to "Start", "Run", and Type: fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1
- Some 16-bit (DOS) applications may not be able to find files and directories with long filenames.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Happy tweaking!

| yeah, I would never follow any tweaks you suggest even if they're backed up by experts. Nobody wants to follow the guy who hitted the wall. |

| Why? Anyone with even a Core Duo has a CPU faster than needed to open folders. If you get lag when opening folders, something is wrong. |

Wrong.
Having vista slows things down because of all the extra unnecessary stuff it does.
Also, your HDD speed will make a difference.
I have a 2.2 C2D laptop and with a fresh install of vista it doesn't feel as snappy as an XP installation.
But I wouldn't call it lag, its just a one second or so difference. |
