The Formerly Middle Class

At the beginning of every recession, there are people who see the downturn as an occasion for moral revival: Americans will learn to live without material extravagances. They’ll simplify their lives. They’ll rediscover what really matters: home, friends and family.

But recessions are about more than material deprivation. They’re also about fear and diminished expectations. The cultural consequences of recessions are rarely uplifting.

How Capitalism Will Save Us

Left to its own devices, the credit crisis, which began in August 2007, would have crushed economies as severely as did the Great Depression.

Belatedly, but thankfully, governments recognized that the only way to get credit flowing again was for them to make quick and direct massive infusions of new equity into beleaguered banks, as well as commit to other emergency measures hitherto unimaginable.

If sensible rescue efforts continue--and they will--the immediate crisis will quickly pass. Shell-shocked businesses and consumers won't recover rapidly from the trauma of recent months, especially as we now cope with recession. But the downturn shouldn't be prolonged: The economy here and those overseas should start to pick up no later than next spring.

I think that is a little too optimistic, but otherwise would fully agree.

the comments on the NY piece are quite something...

quote:
David, why the grim tone? As an immigrant of almost 25 years, I speak on behalf of those like me, that we take nothing for granted. We raise our kids to be prepared for adversity, financial or otherwise. When times are good, we rejoice. When they are not so good, we work harder and make do with less. What is wrong with that - nothing. Human Resilience is a good trait. And one cannot be resilient unless one faces adversity or knows how to live with challenges.

When you speak so grimly of degeneration, please know that happiness is not always connected to wealth or prosperity. People facing scarcity and scaling back of materialism - need not be unhappy. It can also be a time of giving, which in return brings multiples of happiness. There is a saying where I come from - listen to the poor - give them one penny and get a 100,000 in return!

Ok, this reminds me of a conversation I had with my best friend about the financial crisis. To some extent I was raised this way, to never take nothing for granted, so on and so forth. However, isn't
America (the 'world's first superpower' as sarkozy stated on his recent visit to the US) supposed to be the exception? Does it mean that now future generations will have to face economic hardship like 'third world countries'? By this I mean, with the extinction of the social security and the melting of the 401K most Americans will never feel certain about their economic future. This is worrysome in my opinion...

Stupid remark. Only a stupid moron will think like this, of course money and financial security brings happiness. It wasn't called the big depression for nothing. Wake up! No money, no health insurance, no support, no food for your kids...

Yeah like the idiot that talks about it being "disturbing" in more words, he has yet to realize that the saying of "90% of people make 10% of the money and 10% of people make 90% of the money" in his entire life.

As someone who two years ago moved from an affluent Boston suburb to a highly urbanised place, I can assure you that there is a life in an apartment complex. We left behind our cars, lawns, tons of stuff, but regained our life back. Our flat is a fraction of a size of our former house, we use public transportation, we walk in parks and go to museums more. We don't buy things simply because they are on sale, or because we are bored -- we simply don't have place to store them. We interact more with people, because we bump into them more often. The quality of our life is much higher, while we are consuming much less (but better.) There is a huge room for slimming down in American largely wasteful lifestyles, and not all downsizing will be a deprivation. Simplify, and you will be happier. Learn to make your own coffee.

This is good and I think this is the way of the future. Living in bigger cities with better public transit systems, automatically reduces our dependancy on Oil, cars and stuff that simply this world up. I'm sorry, I have parked my car all this week and I've kept myself pretty functional, so for all of you who think that they need a car to 'get to one place or another' reconsider your ideas. well, i'm just saying that we need to start raising awareness.

:)

peace & love

and lots and lots of

How Capitalism Will Save Us

You mean, "How Capitalism Will Save the Bourgeoisie"

Capitalism benefits no working man. America was corrupted by Capitalism back in the 19th century. The Bourgeois Swine have been in bed with the American Government for decades and they are now perverting Socialism and turning it into Corporatism.

The proletariat must unite! Your tax dollars are being squandered by the Bourgeois Swine!
