But I've never known how to decide what key my track or melody is in.
Say I play a melody in a minor scale, the first note of the melody is a C#, is the track therefore in the key C#? |

You can't tell the key of a track by just looking at a single note, whether the first note or last note or whatever. You have to look at all the different notes you use and figure out which scale uses those notes -- C Minor scale, F Major scale, etc.

Ideally you should just know which notes are in which scale so that this won't present a problem. Or you can choose a key for your track before you start writing it. |
