I've faced this same dilemma for a while as I'm by far more of a summer person.

I've considered trying to take up snowboarding and skiing, but the main issue are the prohibitive costs when it comes to starting up as well as the distance (approx 1-1.5 hrs) you have to travel when compared to summer activities. And since I live in the city and don't have a car, I'm reluctant to have to rely upon others to get to a decent hill (which in this case Toronto doesn't even have amazing ones by international standards). There's also the learning curve you have to overcome especially if you've never done it before which will take time.

That said I pretty much spend my winters simply going to the gym, playing indoor court/beach volleyball, or hibernating. I've also started to allocate more vacation time toward this period so I can travel to warm countries in hopes of making my winter (seem) shorter.

So best of luck in your efforts. It'd be different if we all lived somewhere like Vancouver, but unfortunately for TO, there's just not a whole lot to do in the winter that's nearby. Not to mention that our winters feel like they're 9 months long. Definitely a few (-) points when it comes to measuring the quality of life here.

I just picked up a snowboard/bindings for 200$ Its alot more affordable than i remember it being.

If you don't like snow. Pick up a couple decks and mixer. Theres nothing like sipping a baileys cappuccino and spinning deep house indoors during a blizzard.

I think skipper is already set for the DJing as Hobby thing.

The issues with something like Skiing / Snowboarding (for me at least) are.

- Cost of gear: Skis / Boots / Poles / seasonal pass / etc. Also, appropriate clothing - jacket / etc. I know for me at least, the jacket I wear running from house to subway to work and back wouldn't do so well on the hills.
- Storage of gear in the off-season. I barely have a spot to put my winter clothes away in the summer, let alone a bunch of skiing gear.
- Renting is an option, but that adds to the cost if you do it frequently, and also eats up more time having to go through the rental process once you arrive at the mountain.
- Getting there: Looking at generally at least an hour and a half drive to get to someplace like Blue Mountain. If you don't have a car, thats a pain in the ass. Then, toss in cost of gas, and it start's to add up
- Time, really - it's something that (at least living around here), you will need to be dedicating an entire day to.

If you lived in Collingwood, popping to blue mountain for a few runs in the afternoon is possible, then do your day/evenings as normal. Not so easy for people in the city :)

But, given the time / money / transportation ability - it is allot of fun and something I'd like to pick up again at some point. It's not impossible to do, and I have allot of friends that go almost every weekend in the winter - just too much of a pain in the ass for me to pick up right now for myself.

Why is that? Every winter I see women crying at Union station. Not a few, but a lot, at least once a week.

they cry because they are stuck taking the subway because their car has been snowed in.

in the winter my hobby becomes finding the perfect parking spot which is then snowed in by the removal truck, which i then have to dig out for hours, crying.
Skipper
