Bike advice!

Hi,
So, my Specialized Hardrock frame got cracked. I took it back to the shop and Specialized are going to warranty it (lol, 1 month within the 5 year frame warranty). However, they have no stock of Hardrock frames. They have offered to give me a Rockhopper frame (alot $ better), but my old Hardrock didn't have disc brakes. I'm gonna have to get a new rear wheel, rotors and so on.
I've never had disc brakes before and I want to be sure I'm getting decent ones... you know, so that I can avoid dying. I would prefer cable activated so I don't have to get new grips too. Are cable activated ones generally ?
Any recommendations? |

...disc brakes...man, I'm out of touch.
I was hardcore into Mountain Biking when I was 13, around 96-98. Back then, V-Brakes were only on the higher end bikes, Huffy was a joke, Full Suspension was essentially new, and disc brakes were mainly for DH riders with triple crown forks.
By the way, I have no advice to offer on top of this nostalgic reflection. |

If you are under warranty, you are obligated to a free replacement/repair free of charge. If they can't replace the original frame with another comparable model, they should make your other components compatible free of charge to you as well.
BTW, I have my bike for sale. $200 or best offer.

The components only have a 2 year warranty. Only the frame is under warranty still, unfortunately. |

Insist on the frame then... expecially if it's a manufacturer's warranty. I would never let a warranty issue cost me a penny. You have rights. |

They CAN give me a 2009 Hardrock frame, but they would have to order it in from overseas, which is expected to take 3 months. So, instead they have offered to give me a much more expensive frame on the condition that I buy disc brakes for it. To be honest, I would like disc brakes anyway, so this is a good opportunity imo. Likewise, the 2009 Hardrock frame looks flimsy as compared to my old one.
I just want to know what type of disc brakes are good. |

You want hydraulic discs over mechanicals anyday for good performance. The other specialized frame will be very good, does this shop have a website? or can you find me an australian website & I'll show you some good ones :) |

Australia is pretty limited in terms of bike sites. I don't think I can afford hydraulics and I want to keep costs as low as possible. Likewise, since I'm only getting one disc on the rear (keeping V's on the front) it will look pretty weird to have two different grips. As long as they perform better than your run of the mill v-brakes, I'm happy.
Can you recommend any good cable brakes? I hear the model "BB7" thrown around alot? |

| not sure on that term but you can't go wrong with a shimano deore one, £49 here so thats like just over 100 dollars for you ish. good mid-range component |
