DJs playing the same tunes

Im sure Im not the only one that has noticed this, but why is it that a lot of big name trance DJs like Oakey, and Tiesto continue to play the same tracks set after set?

I know the point is to please the crowd, but I think they could do a better job of showcasing newer unreleased stuff.

Back in the day, although I wasnt as educated as I am now, I didnt know a lot of tracks that Oakie used to play and I loved it.

Frankly, Id rather hear a 2 hr set of new material, even if some of them suck than the same repetitive tracks over and over again.

thats very true, I agree. when they get like 150 promo vinyls a week, u'd think they could put some of them to use

Some DJs, like Oakey, seem to showcase mainly their own production and tracks from their own record labels...

Perish the thought, but maybe some DJs even get paid or somehow otherwise influenced to play certain tracks.

DJs in a way can be compared to a band. Bands play the same songs each concert...why can't DJs? I know they are DJs but they are going to play their own stuff as well as stuff from their label if they have one.

Thats because DJ's like Tiesto and Oakie still think they're back in 2000

DJs actually need to play more classics. And I agree w/ Infinty, they tend to hammer year-old tracks. For example: Tiesto's hammering of 'the prophet' in late 2001/early 2002, the track came out in 1999...play it once to surprise people but not in every set.

Hey, people who go clubbing dont have the mp3s of the songs Tiesto's playing sitting on their comps like we do. I'm sure Tiesto changes his playlist everytime he returns to a particular club, but from club to club he might have 75% the same tracks because no one in the clubs has heard them before.

this hit it right on the money

these djs areconstantly touring and promoting their own works, etc.

so for example, say tiesto plays a set @ gatecrasher one week, and then he comes over seas to toronto and plays an almost identical set here
its expected because he's hammering most of the new popular tunes witha coupleclassics in there...and its expected that he'll play all the new hot tunes, along with the tracks that he's popular for that are relatively new

if you want to still be amazed and surprised by sets, don't follow djs playlists and trance religiously :p

Don't we all wish we were back in 1999 and 2000! I want these DJs to play stuff like the 99-00 style. It is the best trance ever made. If I was a big DJ I would throw in old songs for sure!!!! God I wanna hear Oakey spin Not Over Yet (Matt Darey Remix) or Man With No Name - Teleport!! That would make my fricken life!!

Oakey's problem is that he can't shake off the trance-image he has made for himself over the 90s.As you probably noticed Oakey plays breaks nowadays, and I think that after a while he will stop playing trance all together and play more of a prog/breaks style, like Cass or Koma & Bones.I think he's getting tired of trance, and wants to play something completely different. But then he has the problem of the huge fanbase he built over the 90s,who now keep bitching about how good he was back then, and how much he sucks now and so on.My advice to you,Oakey:screw the people who keep bashing you and expect the same played-out,tired and unimaginative sound of 99-trance.Play the tunes that YOU want to play!!!!

(I'm not going to start my rant on 90s trance right now,too lazy)
