Okay so I have about 500 Movies (500Gb) all in AVI format , mostly encoded in DivX currently im using a standalone Phillips DVD Player with USB input using a External HDD to play these files which works great upstairs !

I have another TV connected to a PS3 in the lounge which is basically my only device for playing DVDs / Blue Ray Disc / Games & Audio , I have noticed that .Avi files do play through the PS3 using DVD R/W Media , Before I start dropping my movies onto Disc , does anybody know if you can use the USB device on the PS3 to play these files without any problems.

I did try Tversity turning my PC into a media centre which only works for Pictures and Audio files, only problem is that the PC has to be turned on all the time.

You should be able to play them. The PS3 has a built in utility for playing stuff off USB. You will probably need it to connect to the internet and download the newest firmware though. I believe that fixed alot of the glitches it had originally.

If you don't have wireless internet, just unplug your cable modem and connect it directly to the PS3 with your computer cable to download updates.

Yeah I think i have the latest firmware as I bought MGS4 and I had to download it. I have WiFi hooked up so it aint a problem.

I was thinking of getting a Blue-ray burner for the PC and adding video files to it but I read they need to be in a certain format on BD Disks.

Anyways will give a try tonight with Prison Break and see it works.

If you have a PC, you use windows media player as a media server. This works great, I watch lots of movies of my gf's laptop over my wireless network.

The new firmware update allows FULL SCREEN FLASH videos. That means full screen movies and TV shows from Hulu.com I just watched a few episodes of Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles streamed on my PS3. No need for a cable box any more. ;) Pwnage.

Just remember that PS3 can only read FAT32 external drives at the moment, which means no High Def content or anything more than 4 gigs.

You can copy it to the PS3 hard drive can't you? I've copied over 2GB of music to the HD and am using it as a custom soundtrack for Wipeout. It seems like you should be able to copy video files as well.

I think what he means is this:

The file size limitation on a FAT32 file system is 4GB, and since most, if not all HD content is >4GB, you will not be able to store those unless the file system is NTFS, which PS3 does not support.
