ROLLIN CONNECTION

Friday Jan 23 – BROWN ALLEY

Darkbeat has secured a monster lineup indicative of its diverse music policy. Featuring one of our favourite guests Anthony Pappa, Space resident Paul Woolford, and one of the leading influential producers and DJ’s in the early years – Cass.

Together all three represent the past, present and future of modern dance music. Be sure to witness them live in a proper environment.

Nuff Said.

Anthony Pappa

Anthony Pappa has taken his rightful place at the top table of DJ royalty. Running alongside that work at the coal face of club culture has been Anthony’s parallel career as a producer. As a classically trained drummer who can both read and write music, Anthony is rare amongst DJs in really understanding the music, and in the process of piecing it together. The man knows his way around a studio as well as a DJ booth, prompting Pete Gooding to quip he’s “the best DJ, technically, I ever saw”.

After a couple of years focusing on his gigs at all the best clubs on the planet, in 2008 Anthony has turned his attention back to producing music. He’s set up his own label, Red Light District, home to his first original track in quite a while – Outback - released in March; and in April, Anthony has the triple disc Moments album on Hi-Note scheduled for international release, which finally gives him the scope to dig into all four corners of his record box, and demonstrate the scale of his appreciation for electronic music: “It starts off with deep house, then tech house, then finishes off with techno,” he explains. “And it goes through whatever in the middle to get there!” Building through the likes of Music Is Improper by Friendly People, Darko Esser’s Blackout and Jamie Stevens’ Keep Her Space, the album also includes cuts like Rubicon from Avilo and Stel’s Sparky’s Heartstopper - quality tracks from the best in electronic music, moulded together perfectly by Pappa - the human metronome.

Paul Woolford

With an approach and attitude that is slightly different to most, Paul Woolford has established himself as one of the most original dj / producer / remixers that house music has exposed in recent times.

After these initial releases Paul began his Bobby Peru project for 20/20 Vision, and in February 2000 on the release of his debut LP 'Death Of A Player', was once again on the receiving end of widespread positive acclaim from the press (Album Of the Month in DJ magazine amongst other excellent reviews). This was the project that really put Paul on the map both with the press and with many djs and dance music fans, and ensured that Bobby Peru as an artist was developed further, and is now an on-going part of Paul's studio life.

From there things snowballed, and whilst many labels have offered a home for Paul's music, he's been selective and given his quality singles to 2020 Vision, Underwater, Junior Boys Own, Subliminal, Soma's Freelance Science imprint, and most recently Mark Brown's Cr2 label and Nic Fanciulli's Saved label. These releases and his remixes have made fans of his production from a wide range of djs from across the board including Laurent Garnier, Andrew Weatherall, Pete Tong, Derrick Carter, Paul Daley (Leftfield), John Digweed, Danny Howells, Erol Alkan, Dan Ghenacia, Nic Fanciulli, Erick Morillo, Lottie, Dj Heather, Slam, Ralph Lawson, Yousef, Dave Seaman - the list continues and this is testament to the quality control and a signpost of Paul's long-term wider aims. Simultaneously the list of labels Paul has remixed for grows all the time and so far Paul has been involved in the production of around 80 records.

Throughout all of this studio time, Paul has also built up his global dj bookings. He is universally regarded within dance music as someone who djs as well as they produce and sees himself very much 50% DJ and 50% producer. The clubs and events he's played at and rocked speak for themselves: Fabric London, Pacha in Buenos Aires Argentina and Ibiza, Smartbar Chicago, Crobar Miami, Berlin Love Parade, Space Ibiza, Peter Pan in Rimini Italy, Piekarnia in Poland, Centro 360 in Singapore, Creamfields UK & Buenos Aires and Cream Ibiza at Amnesia, Homelands consecutively for the last 5 years. These are just a few from an ever-growing list.

Cass [Deadset]

Many of the Darkbeat regulars will remember Cass from back in the day when he was making the influential deep records at the turn of 2000. What many might not know is that Cass also produces under the moniker ‘Deadset’ with Tom Mangan. DJ’s such as Jesse Rose, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Andrew Weatherall and Claude VonStroke have been playing their tracks everywhere to great effect.

The duo formally known as Cass + Mangan have previously remixed the likes of Muse, Miss Kittin, Röyksopp, & Tiefschwarz, They have had releases and remixes on labels such as Fine, Blu Fin, Souvenir, Made To Play, DirtyBird, Moon Harbour, Wall Of Sound and Tsuba.

Deadset have recently played gigs to packed crowds at Weekend, Watergate and Panorama Bar in Berlin. They have also tweaked out their sound at The Key, The End and Fabric in London to name a few. Recently they have been performing live shows that showcase the tracks from the album Keys Open Doors. Deadset are also a rather accomplished DJ duo and have recently done one of the feted Pod Cast for the Resident Advisor website, which was considered one of the best of 2007…
