Some change is good, some not so good (why do they have to do an electro remix of all the classics?). |
some remixers breathe new life into forgotten classics with style, others who butcher already-perfect anthems that should never be touched should be shot in the face |

Psssst: Nobody's gonna tell Dubfire or Lawler that you don't like them anymore. | I just PM'd Lawler. He knows now. Secrets out. |

There are still tonnes of djs that play "oldschool" style (though I don't know if that's the best term to use to describe it) - just that most of them are busy playing festival/club circuits over in Europe and will rarely make appearances on these shores. Ben Sims, Dave Clarke, DJ Bone, Rob Hood, Steve Rachmad, etc...all play in a very similar vein to the way they've always played, and of course use music (whether current or retro) that suits that style. They haven't fallen out of fashion because they aren't following trends and there's enough appreciation for them to continue with their chosen way of rocking the ones and twos.
It also holds true that some djs do play different types of sets depending on where they're playing - the same "minimal" Techno dj that you recently heard in Toronto might play a much harder and more varied set were they booked to play in Eastern Europe, where they know the crowds will be much more receptive to that particular style.
North American crowds aren't exactly clamouring for the likes of Sims, Clarke, et al, because we don't have the venues or fan base to support that end of things. Music like this belongs in big warehouses, with massive, high quality sound systems and lighting and thousands of fans to support it - that part of the scene went bye-bye in Toronto around the turn of the century (<---just had to say that). Sure, we do have a handful of world-class clubs here, but a night at the Guv or Circa is still a far cry from bringing together 40,000+ Techno fans, spread out over 5 rooms for one night of a veritable who's-who of the genre (see "ILOVETECHNO" in Ghent, Belgium).
Having said all that, the only thing that really matters to me in a dj set is good storytelling, which as I see it by default implies a good sense of history. Someone who only plays the latest and greatest is immediately going to find themselves in the company of hundreds of other superstars and wannabes who are all doing the same thing ("because that's what's popular"), which is probably why so many djs I hear snippets of these days all seem to sound like they've been picking their tunes from the same Beatport promo list. Deep crates and the ability to seamlessly fuse the old with the new make for the most delicious sets, imho. |

Doesn't it annoy u that soo many artists/DJs have changed their music/style over the years and have made themselves less appealing???
I miss Sven Vath's old style and his sets from OMEN as well as Dubfire, and Steve Lawler who have changed BIG time.
lets not forget Sasha and Digweed who use to be amazing but now suck
And whats up with DJs playing that boring minimal nowadays?
Feel free to post sets and videos from back in the day :D |
I've been saying this for the past few years now... |

What he is trying to say is that these up beat DJ's (some trance...some techno...hard house...) ALL went into the minimal sound...
They are following a trend...I think it's cause they are all old and tired...
Playing slow, quite music is less physical strain....
here we go... |

haven't your music tastes changed in time? mine certainly have, i think it's natural that a DJ's tastes would too, how drastically would depend from one to the other. i'm sure they keep a special place for all the tracks that meant something back in the day for them and used to get huge reactions but if everyone else is moving on from the sound it's going to sound like a wayback playback night if you just want to listen to them for nostalgia. artists that always keep the exact same sound (e.g. the strokes, on every track) die a quick death, others that change up and make artistic decisions based on the changes within their genre and surrounding genres (e.g. justin timberlake) will lose some fans and make new ones for what they do, the old fans will still love them for what they used to do and hopefully remember fondly, the new ones will appreciate the evolution of the music |
I guess in my opinion the music hasn't evolved into anything better...if i liked the minimal sound maybe i wouldn't rant about it....I don't think a dj has to necessarily adopt the same sound for their whole career but to go from playing house,tribal..etc..to only minimal is just frustrating for fans like myself...how is that an evolution...?? to me an evolution would be to build on your arsenal rather than changing it up completely...
and I have learned to stay away from parties where I'm sure that the dj is going to play a minimal set..i.e. digweed, lawler, dubfire and company...
kaskade and green velvet are to dj's that come to mind (that i have seen recently) who have stayed true to their sound...i have learned to pick my parties so i don't end up bitching afterwards...;) |

pretty sure NYE 95/96 was Syrous, Dose, Betterdays and Destiny.. I think it was called 'United we Stand" or something like that. Betterdays pulled out a few days before the event. it was Held at a rollerink complex in Scarborough. |

Just checked my trusty red book - I used to write down all the parties I'd hit...cheesy I know. Anyhew, the "United we Stand" party was on 31 Dec 96 and it was Utopia that had pulled out last minute. I recall all of the peeps (seemed to be church crowd) at Tim Hortons next door were stunned to see the post-party casualties arrive in there - it was frikkin' cold too!
The one I'm talking about (the yr previous) was called "PBS" (P. Force, B. Days, Syrous). Took one bus from Union Station, they dropped us off god-knows-where, only to load us all onto a 2nd school bus, to ultimately take us to the meat packing plant, in Mississauga area I do believe. Pretty sure this venue was only used that one time. Crazy high ceiling and very industrial feel. On a side note, the dj laid down that "Tom Sawyer" track (original) from Rush (lots of synths) as one of the last ones of the party...(kind of à la Tenaglia)... |

I hope on NYE Lawler plays UN7 - RRR (Rosy Romantic mix) classic from 2003.
Even though I know he won't, it would make my night. |
