Ableton Live 7

Being unemployed, I've had alot of time on my hands. Mostly spending the last two days how to work the program and get familiar with the different aspects. I've made a few discoveries.

One, if you have software synths that use alot of memory, and a midi controller (im using the mc909 until the 2 octave M-audio controller comes in to have more control on the melodies.) at any rate, this seems to have alot of solutions for where I used to have headaches with other software.

Two... and maybe I haven't learned the entire program yet, but any DJ looking to this program for the magical solution to creating technically flawless DJ sets.. well..its not as easy as it seems. Yes..every audio clip you bring in gets conformed to the same tempo, but its up to you to not only phrase them, but align them as well. Using a mouse to tweak the EQs doesnt compare to using a mixer..which means you need to bring along a midi controller with the laptop to get that control. Unless I discover something I already have not, I don't really see myself using this program for live sets or mixes.

Producing wise, I have nothing but good things to say.

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents out there. Anyone else used this yet? What do you like/dislike about it?

I really like Ableton. Most of the mixes I post are done quickly in Ableton some with only the mouse and some with a midi controller. I decided I didn't like it as much as decks, so I'm using Traktor right now. Like you said it isn't that easy, so to me having the control that decks and a mixer provide is much better.

For producing I like it for quick sketches and for arrangements. I'm not satisfied with using it to mix down a track, but for getting out ideas and arranging mixed down loops it is really good. It would also be my main choice if I were doing a Live PA.

Right now I am learning Logic and moving away from Ableton, but I still see myself using it for quite some time. I think it is an excellent program. It has also worked well for me to learn on while I save up for hardware since it comes with softsynths, samplers, effects, etc...

Ableton 6 > Ableton 7....except for the drums :wtf:

i like ableton 5 because of the way it sample audio. ableton 7 sucks for sampling audio. it sounds clanky. but the transitions on ableton ing rock.

I actually just ordered a CME Bitstream 3X controller yesterday & am going to upgrade to Live 7 here after Christmas. I have Live 5 & 6, but haven't been using it for anything other than creating the occasional mix. I'm about to dive neck deep into the program and see if I can learn it's full potential from both a DJ perspective & producing...

Currently using these to learn the program. Pretty handy so far.

Can you provide your computer specs? I'm not having this problem, but I also have 2gigs of RAM. It might depend on your latency/buffer settings as well. Though I'm far from an expert on this.

I don't really like Ableton's sound either. I used to always write in Ableton and then mixdown in Cubase because I thought it sounded better.

Yeah, making mixes in Ableton is a pain in the ass. I don't have MIDI anything, so it takes a bit longer.

Absolutely. Maybe it's my inexperience with it and lack of using anything other than a keyboard and mouse, but it's a pain to try and get it organized the way you want it to.

The thing that kills it for me is that I can't find a possible way of cueing it up in headphones before sending it the the main outs like with decks and a mixer. That aspect of more 'traditional' mixing has always been critical for me to get things setup like I need to. I see artists plugging in custom interfaces at shows and the DJM 800 has midi capability, so perhaps there is a way.

The other things is synchronizing the tracks and getting them to start exactlyt where I need to. But these are issues that will take more time to learn the program. When I get my macbook and consider using it to play out, more than likely it will be with serrato than AL7. The only reason I would consider using a lapto at a gig is to have access to all the tracks, imo. Keeping things organized on CD with new stuff coming out every week is a bit of a hassle.

To cue in Ableton, you have to have a multi-channel soundcard. Basically, you set your main audio to one channel, and set your headphones to another channel in the soundcard. See this video, this guy is pretty good at explaining things.

As for getting it to sync when you want it to, that's where using a controller with a trigger assigned helps. That's why I just ordered the Bitstream controller. Essentially the same layout as a mixer, but has triggers on it that can be used to launch clips.
