A RECORD number of Australians are falling prey to ruthless scam merchants exploiting the economic meltdown to target the poor and elderly.

A 37 per cent hike in scams has been reported in 2008 compared with last year, the Courier-Mail reports.

And there are warnings the Rudd Government's $10.4 billion handout to pensioners and families this week could trigger a fresh wave.

More than 17,000 people have lost at least $33 million to rip-off merchants this year.

Incredibly, one of the oldest remains the most common: the "Nigerian bank" letter scam, which has netted $10.5 million from Australian victims.

The consumer watchdog has warned the number of reported scams will only grow as the economy deteriorates.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Graeme Samuel said the aged and low-income families should be particularly vigilant about "too good to be true" opportunities.

"Consumers have to be aware that scammers are eager as ever to part them from their hard-earned money," he said.

According to the ACCC, $32.9 million was "lost" to scam merchants in the year to November 30.

With thousands of Australians being laid off, the ACCC is also seeing a rise in the number of scams offering big-paying jobs which don't exist.

Rich and powerful top Madoff's fraud victims: report
11 hours ago

NEW YORK (AFP) — Some of the world's most powerful and wealthy investors were taken in by New York broker Bernard Madoff's alleged giant pyramid scheme, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

The Journal reported that victims of Madoff's alleged multi-billion-dollar fraud stretched from Tokyo to Europe and top investors in the United States.

Madoff was arrested Thursday after allegedly confessing to employees that he had been running a so-called Ponzi scheme, or pyramid fraud, which had collapsed with losses exceeding 50 billion dollars.

For decades Madoff was a pillar of Wall Street, cultivating an exclusive list of investment clients including big banks, hedge funds and individuals.

These clients are all now scrambling to discover the extent of their losses, while the authorities are trying to determine why the alleged scam was not uncovered earlier.

The Journal quoted unnamed sources saying that French bank BNP Paribas, Tokyo-based Nomura Holdings and Zurich's Neue Privat Bank were exposed.

Among the long list of top-drawer investors taken in by the scam were the owner of the New York Mets baseball team Fred Wilpon and the former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles American football team Norman Braman, according to the Journal.

Spanish newspapers reported Saturday that a fund run by leading bank Santander was also heavily exposed.

The Wall Street Journal reported that several funds of hedge funds -- which raise investments for hedge funds -- have taken huge losses.

"I'm wiped out," the Journal quoted Sandra Manzke, chairman of one such company, Maxam Capital Management, as saying.

This week, for the first time, I received spam in my mailbox (in real life, that is). It was a lovely ponzi scheme.

It was hilarious - it said I had to be responsible and not break the chain because "other people depended on me". I lol'd.

Does this Google Map snap show a UFO over Sydney?

THE truth isn't just out there - it's apparently right near the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Shocked Daily Telegraph reader Steve Jolliffe spotted what appears to be a flying saucer hovering directly above Millers Point while checking out Google Maps. See it below or click here to go to Google.

"I live in the street on the corner and it has a beautiful view of the harbour. I was just trying to get a look on Google when I saw it," Mr Jolliffe said.

"It just caught my eye - I couldn't get back to bed. I thought it was a UFO straight away."

The bizarre discovery comes at the tail end of a bumper year for close enounters of the third kind with strange craft seen all over NSW, Australia and Britain.

UFO over Sydney?
And Apollo 14 astronaut Dr Edgar Mitchell - who knows his stuff as co-holder of the record for longest-ever moon walk - caused a storm when he insisted extra-terrestrials had paid repeated visits to our planet but the encounters were kept secret by government agencies.

Then a Turkish security guard took a series of photographs which experts insist are the "most important images of a UFO ever caught on camera", showing a saucer-like craft flying in the night sky which under scrutiny even apparently reveal alien beings inside.

Careful study of the Google picture isn't quite as enlightening. Photograph experts warned it could be a distortion - but Google didn't deny it was an alien craft.

A spokesman joked: "The interplanetary internet project is clearly gaining momentum quicker than we thought!"

He added: "Of course, as with human-owned vehicles in Google street view, the licence plates on this UFO are not identifiable."

Yes, a picture such as this couldn't possibly be an effect of light on the lens...........

And not to mention thats one bigarsed UFO, over Sydney Harbour, and no one saw it one the day the photo was taken?
