'on-call' shifts (pg. 2)

This is why I love the fact that I lucked out at my work. I work retail and, although it's even completely unheard of to have a sort of set schedule for someone in my position at the store, I work Monday through Friday, 5AM-2PM. Not to mention the fact that I scored the 15th-25th of this month off, also unheard of. I guess kissing a bit of ass here and there and working an incredible amount of overtime in the past has really paid off.

Aaaaaaaaaaanyways, I've always thought that on-call shifts and split shifts were absolute horse . My work is smart enough to realize that it pisses people off and will only schedule you as needed. If, for some reason, we need extra help, you'll get a phone call asking if you want to pick up some extra hours even if it will result in overtime for you.

My girlfriend, however, works at J Crew and has to suffer the split-shift bull. The only difference here is that it's not the store that has to call her in, it's HER responsibility to call in two hours before in order to see if she's working. Thing is, the on-call shifts are shifts that would add four hours to the beginning or end of an already existing four hour shift. So yes, in some cases, she wont know if she'll be off at 6PM or 10PM until five minutes to 6.

So irritating.

yea for some reason that is pretty common. surprisingly most clothing stores do it and some coffee shops as well.

i agree, its so ing gay and its really unfair to the employee for the exact reasons mentioned. im quite surprised there isnt a law against it. its ing stupid and pathetic

ive never had an on call but dont you get paid a little bit for the time your 'on-call'?

Hmmm, something about that picture doesn't look quite right... probably just my imagination!

Oh, and don't put yourself in a position to be on call unless you're getting salary.

We never had on call shifts at my old work, but they used to always call us up on our days off and ask us to do shifts. Which is fine, sometimes people don't show and sometimes people are happy to come in an earn some extra cash. But then they expected you to have some serious, valid excuse as to why you wouldn't come in to cover it, and guilt you hardcore 'oh if you don't come in everyone else is gonna be swamped under blah blah.' Always made me rage hardcore. If it's my day off on the roster, then I shouldn't have to justify not wanting to go to work.

Were you planning on taking pictures of your cervix and sending them out as Christmas cards this year?
