He was decent in late 2006 at Footwork until the massive trainwrecking started and killed the vibe.

Sarah coined his set as "airy fairy tech prog", lol!

bang on (for that night, anyway).

One of the worst, most bizarre, random, awful sets I have ever heard was his first time playing system...however I stayed for the entire night so maybe it wasn't him but me.

Will give him a second chance.

I myself was not too impressed with Holden's early days. But in the last 3 years he has completely changed and become a true genius behind the decks....Plus he has some tracks that nobody can get there
hands on///

Holden=Genius...Plus what can annyone really say bad about BorderCommunity.Amazing label :P

After his 'King of the Pixies' days, he definitely started to branch out in a new direction. I'm not sure if it was deliberate or not, because I never knew if he was fond of that nick name or not.

He definitely started to play around behind the decks a bit too much, and it started to sound disjointed. But the fact remains that the guy is supremely talented and when he is on, it really does feel like magic.

His set in the Kool Haus, in 2003, during an Ultra Spin, is still one of my favs in that room.

I would be very interested to hear a set from the last year.

lol

I haven't seen Holden since the System days, but I'm looking forward to this night based solely on the weird opinions in this thread ;)

Didn't he also rank crazy high in that RA poll?
jad
does anybody have links for recent holden sets?

Just got a set from July '08, will upload in a bit.

I really like the melodic elements in this set, as I always have from James, as he can really build a nice soothing sound. The mixing between track and effects leaves a bit to be desired, as sometimes he pulls it off brilliantly, but just train wrecks to a double beat other times. The other thing I noticed, and I think this has been true for a few years for him, he seems to playing less song sounding tracks, and more samples fit together to make a set. Not a huge distinction but definitely moves the music forward, which may or may not resonate with listeners.

Been that way since he changed over from just playing tunes normally to actually sampling. I don't know if he has switched over to a laptop yet, but it may help him pull off what he is trying to do. As Richie said ' the beat matching, focus on layering'.
