Today as I was in class (Science oddly enough) I was thinking about trance music since some guy in my class was asking me to burn him trance CDs. Well that got me thinking about what it would be like to become a DJ, since the guy I'm making the CD's for is a DJ. Well to get to the point I want to know everything about it, I'll make a list of things I need to know below so it makes it easier and I greatly appreciate any help that you guys can give me :D.

1. What do I need (All I know is 2 turntables, the mixer thing in the middle, good headphones and obvious vinyl)

2. What are good brand names for products from question 1 (I know Sony Technics is a good brand name at least I heard it was)
My budget is probably about 600$ Canadian but I'm still open minded to spend more :D

3. What are some good online vinyl stores that I could use without shipping charges reaming me up the ass (I live in Ontario, Canada)

4. Does anyone know any vinyl stores in the Mississauga/Toronto area that I could be going to to get my gear and/or vinyls?

Anything else I should be informed of would also help greatly :D thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Try the dj booth forum. To be honest, you'll need a steady job, part time atleast.

I have 2 technics 1200 turntables, a mixer, headphones, and a little over 100 records, and i've spent a couple of thousand already. You'd be surprised at how much money it costs, but its just like any other hobby, you gotta put in the time and $$$ if you really love it.

I suggest getting the gear used. Technics are tanks, they're usually just as good used as they are new, and it'll save u some cash, as they run about $700 CDN + tax EACH, which is already over your budget. :P You can always get cheaper gear, but I have no advice there, since I don't have experience with them. IF you can't afford it, then save up and just play around with computer mp3 mixing programs like virtual turntables, learn how to beatmatch and everything while you get the $$$ for your decks. that's what I did, got my decks last november, and made the transition pretty smoothly.

I'm gonna be gettin a job right after I move at around the end of this month. I'm gonna be very commited to this since I want to DJ in my spare time and really love music. I'll probably end up getting used turntables and other stuff and I allready have good speakers and an amp :D. I just need to find myself the gear and I'll be buying a vinyl every week or two since I'll have enough money from my paycheck :D. Thanks for the help. Any other info I should no and tips, information would be great :D

head to the DJ booth forum for more info.

but while you are here, i will give you the most important tip of all.

if you are serious about DJing, DON'T buy anything else except 2 technics 1200SLs. they are the most expensive decks, but they are the best, and that's what you need if you are serious. they come in MK2 or M3D, M3D has a couple little additions like a pitch reset button and usually costs $50 more or so. but basically they are the same thing, it doesn't really matter which ones you get. I got mine brand new from the store, for $650 each canadian plus tax. it took a bit of ass kissing on the salesman and shopping around, but it was worth it.

just, DON'T get any other turntables, you will regret it!

everything else is negotiable once you have your techs.

i would suggest a basic 2 or 3 channel mixer next, and a decent pair of headphones, and some good needles next.

I choose to go a little overboard on the mixer(vestax PCV275) and needles(matched pair of stanton trackmasters), cost me quite a bit, but i won't have to upgrade for a while now.

then after that, go crazy buying vinyl.. there are TONS of vinyl stores in toronto, and lots of ebay sellers too. i get a lot of vinyl from ebay.

anyway, good luck m8 :)

tables I recommend technics and vestax for top gear.. stanton for cheaper (thats what I have).

mixer I suggest vestax, stanton, all companies have their strong points.

record shops in TO? I always go to release records , a great shop. but be prepared to spend $17 per track or so.

also DJing takes alot of time and dedication.

TECHNICS....BANG FOR UR BUCK.......HAHAHA....:D
Ebay.com for records....pretty good prices...
