Not very surprising. Has no one checked out his Choice compilation? |
Listen to Danny's set @ The Sunset Club, Charlotte (Broadcasted On Proton Radio 31-05-2005). In the thread, lücid remembered me of how Danny can spin some nice downtempo chill-house-esque stuff. That set shows, for a large part, Danny's variety, skills, sound, and loads more then I can think off right now.
Wish we heard more from the man (like some of those 10 hrs sets :p). |

Amazing example of fun, danceable music that doesn't restrict itself to four-on-the-floor, or typical "EDM" breakbeat and still totally works.
I'm really going to start working on getting more of a Howells approach to sets... rather than trying to craft sets that have a particular "sound" throughout, just play good freakin' music. I think that's my goal as a DJ for 2009.
I spend way too much time trying to "define" my sound, but the problem is that I like so many varieties of music that I don't want to limit myself. After listening to a Danny Howells set, I start saying, "why the hell AM I limiting myself?" |

Spoken like a true DJ, versatility is key to success. Now a days I play anything from micro house, to hard techno, to ghetto/booty house, to ing bossa nova.
By the way, this set is pure sex. |

I agree. I thought the same when listening. Back to the roots and have fun, end of story |

I had the same problem. My solution was to stop spinning records (due to absence of time - i have to work on my MSc-thesis). Howells is indeed a very good example of a DJ who does his thing on his own way; jus playing the good stuff. And he thus might be a very good solution to your problem.
No matter if a track from is 2008 or 1973, he knows how to blend music in such a way it just blows you from your rockers. His 2007 EM is a very good example of that. He uses some older track in that set. Also, his cd 'Danny Howells - Choice - A Collection Of Classics' is said to be the same sort of the same example. Also, you might want to listen to his latest mix comp on Renaissance; epic gold, lasered into bits :).
Howells was and will remain one of my top fave DJ's ever - he's consistent, does what he likes best, and doesnt play for cash or popularity; he plays with his soul on the decks ;). |

That's why he's the best dj in the world. I think he has had the right idea for a long time by not being stuck in one sort of sound. He is constantly changing but not limiting himself. So many people are up techno's ass at the moment in this area and it's kind of annoying when someone plays house music and they get for it. Danny is the best at just making things flow throughout the night whatever genre it is. General music knowledge is so important for being a good dj. There's too many dj's who only know what's on the beatport top lists these days :whip: |

Danny's set @ The Arc (10 hrs set) and @ the Sunset Club, Charlotte (6.5 hrs), are 2 good examples of his diversity in track selection/building up a set. Both sets starts off so laidback, almost as if its a lounge/ambient cd youre listening too. Slowly (after an hour) the set evolves into a second 'EDM-susbgenre'. Classic sets you MUST have :). |

Oh I have both ;) I've been listening to the Sunset Club one moreso recently. I can't wait to see him spin again. Luckily he enjoys playing up here at Rise (300 person afterhours) so he will back around WMC time. |
