Santa is just anglosaxon from Sinterklaas, http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas which was brought to a new land by the brave Dutch sailors. |

Apparently he was born around Sept-Oct. It's not unlike how we in Australia have a public holiday for the Queens birthday (on a day months apart from her actual birthday).
The 25th of Dec was a date celebrated by the pagans of the era, and was an attempt to sell the new religion to these people. (note: the pagan festival on the 25th of Dec actually celebrates the birth of the sun - similar to the christian celebration of the birth of the son). |
