New York State May Tax Downloads, Pics, Pay TV
Faced with one of the bleakest financial pictures in memory, New York Gov. David Paterson on Tuesday released a $121 billion proposed budget that would hit the entertainment industry and consumers in the pocketbook. The budget would tax digital downloads such as iTunes movies, TV shows and music and would end sales-tax exemptions on movie tickets, cable TV, satellite TV and radio, and entertainment and sporting events. All have been exempt from the state's sales tax. (Hollywood Reporter)

Could CD Quality Downloads Be An Answer To The Sales Slump?

I normally wouldn't care but I wouldn't put it past Quebec to imitate the actions of New York's government....if these decisions could be made on a provincial level. It just sucks whenever a government signals that it plans to introduce taxes. Obviously they were thinking "hmmm, how else can we make money? By introducing new sales taxes, of course!"
