Decent synchronisation program

Remember that crappy "Microsoft Briefcase" circa 1995? I'm looking for something like that.

I have two external hard drives, one stays at home and one lives at work in case the first one dies. I have about 200GB worth of stuff (mostly music) which gets modified very regularly, and thus it's not viable to copy across single folders.

Currently, I'm formatting the secondary drive every month and then copying the contents from the first as a whole. This is a very length process. I'm looking for something which will synchronise the two so that they are exactly the same. I've tried a few programs and they all ended up deleting files they weren't supposed to our not properly updating other files which I had changed comments and ID tags for, etcetera.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me.

What you want is the free tool provided by MS:

SyncToy v2

"Now there is an easier way. SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without additional complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder."

Thank you sir.

I've never understood just exactly what the difference between a "PowerToy" and a regular program is.

I think it's like the difference between a podcast and an mp3 file that you can download.

I've always seen it as something Microsoft was too lazy to put in windows, or simply overlooked it. lol

Sync toy does something similiar to rsync on *nix/osx.

Rsync is probably one of the best back up tools you can ever imagine. I have my file server rsync to my desktop and I soon will have an offsite backup rsync daily to it as well!

The cool thing about rsync though is that it just copies what needs to be copied, the things that have changed. So say you have an mp3 and you change the ID3 tag on it, it sees the difference and just transfers the bytes that changed, not the whole file.
