Do you think 2009 will be good year for EDM in Toronto?

I'm very optimistic right now. So far, 2 for 2 on awesome parties count. Jan looks a bit bare right now, but starting Feb, hopefully we'll see some good parties.

I think we will start seeing an increase in hard trance in Toronto. Techno will start to fade out and there will be little change in the house scene.
I don't think we will see many new International DJs come to Toronto....it will be a lot of the same....although I think AVB will not be here as often and Lawler will not continue with a quaterly residence in Toronto. |

i hope we see the minimal trend find its way out the door...
international di's will still flock toronto..nothing has changed in 08 to bring about any sort of change like that...toronto is a favourite spot for many, many international dj's...some people are just spoiled and don't see this city for what it is..:)
i do hope for the sake of the scene in Toronto..WEMF is replaced by something similar..some sort of festival on a large scale.. |

And i will wait till A&B come to say if its going to be a good year. I am looking forward to this so much! Hope it will be a good party to start off the early year. |

So far Footwork seems to be continuing their trend of booking interesting DJs. If January is any indication of 2009 in general, it looks like Footwork is where I'll be spending the majority of my time like I did in the latter half of 2008.
As for Guv, I lost hope a long time ago that they'd start making more creative, cutting edge bookings. I think we'll see more of the same recycled DJMag DJs. To the Guv's credit though, as a business model, it seems to be working... at least for now. They seem to be trying to tap this new mash-up, hipster market, but I think that may die out quicker than we expect, possibly even this year. I often wonder if Guv's "safe bet" booking strategies will cause it to stagnate given the intensifying of competition of the club scene. I expect Lawler on the Skybar for Canada Day, an Armin 8-hour set, and maybe even Dubfire or Digweed headlining a big party, lol.
I hope to see Platform upping the ante a bit more this year. I think that with the growing popularity of techno, these guys have huge potential. They had some good bookings in 2008.
In the latter half of 2008, there were hints that the media, certain politicians (such as our good friend Adam Vaughan), and the police are digging trenches for a new war on clubland. I really hope that this doesn't end up happening, but there are currently no signs that this situation is going to get any better.
In 2008, the "Toronto sound" started moving away from minimal into harder techno. I expect this to continue, and then eventually techno will start getting deeper with deep house making a comeback. This new deep techno and deep house sound is really gaining momentum in Europe. |

If there is one thing I have learned North America is usually 3-5 years behind Europe....hopefully we can speed the process up a little. |

Hope you're right about Platform and the techno scene, Greenhorn. I've been asking for a mix of deeper, funkier techno and hard techno since that first techno event at System in 2003, lol.
As for the Guv, I lost hope for them two years ago. They've been the Crocodile Rock of EDM for a long time and there's no reason for them to tamper with that formula now as it seems to be quite a successful one for them. |

First of all, I don't think Toronto has ever gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to the EDM scene or DJ bookings.
In fact i think Toronto is pretty high up in the rankings for "the scene" and its clubs.
2009 in Toronto wont be any different than 2008.
I mean, 2008 rocked with all the DJ's that came to this city... most cities don't even see half of the DJ's we do.
Having said that, i think with the whole Z103 being live to air at the guv, we will see more and more mainstream DJ's get booked.
Am i wrong? |
