Brilliant remix, loving what's been done to the track.

No, it's not. A remix is taking the components from the original song and modifying, twisting, reversing, looping, filtering, stretching, equalising or otherwise changing them and using them to create something new, different and hopefully good. A couple of new elements can be added tastefully.

On the other hand, making an original song from scratch and then throwing a few bars of the breakdown from the song you were "remixing" over the top defeats the purpose of the whole process.

That's just your opinion, yet a common one, what a remix is. There are no absolute rules for making a remix. It's just what people think a remix should sound like. Some people prefer remixes very different to the original and some prefer remixes only a slightly tweaked, more similar to the original.

A remix is purely the remixers' vision of the remixed track, no matter whether the resulted track is 99.9% the same than the original or 99.9% different with only a fracture of a second bit used from it. Often the remixes do sound nothing like the original, like most dub or instrumental mixes of poppy tracks are but does that really matter if the "remix" is good?

I can see your point, but people would also moan if producers put out new tunes as their own, if they had robbed other peoples melodies etc.

I think it is better that even the most extreem of remixes still overtly credit the original producer personally :)

I wasn't commenting on whether or not the remix "sounds" like the original - some of my favourite remixes are so completely different to their sources that they sound original . I was only saying that a remix should predominantly use the sounds created in the production of the original song; otherwise what is the point of remixing?

it all comes down to a matter of taste. some people prefer the remixes to stay true to the orginal. others prefer complete makeovers. i prefer something inbetween :thepirate

Again...I said nothing about staying true to the original, only that the derivative should be made up of parts from the original rather than completely new elements.
