somebody post that instructional video with richie hawtin.
There are so many different levels to being a DJ, whether your a local DJ, International DJ, bedroom DJ, or a producer/wannabedj.
Being a DJ has many more elements to it than just turning knobs. The mixing is the easiest part once you have it down, that is why most of the software now just does it for you. Its all about track selection, and the structure of a set IMO.
However,as a local DJ like myself, even harder is getting out and about and hustling gigs. As a local DJ, the toughest part is getting good gigs that will properly represent you and your sound as a DJ, and convincing promoters to pay you for something many would be doing for free anyway.
Additionally, properly promoting yourself and making sure to bring people through the door, unfortunatly, has proven to be more important than even solid mixing or track selection these days. Promoters, for the most part, dont care what you do behind the decks, so long as you pull heads through the door. |

Very true,
to promoters its all about making that bank! |

All sorts of Djs I have seen tweak the knobs, I do believe its all for show really.
Heres an old photo of Tiesto playing with the knobs on the old Rotary Rane mixer in the main at 1015 years back. Watching him back then I noticed he did it alot.

I recall Armin doing the same thing when he mixed Suburban Train and Yet another day live on that same mixer, but just to fine tune the bass on both tracks. Watching Armin at Ruby last year I see he only does the mids and Lows also. I could be wrong.
The way the system is setup at 1015, its really best to keep the eq's centered and only mess with the lows. Since its tuned to auto EQ for the best sound. Since the soundweb is tuned so that its percise and works best while the mids and highs are centered, I really couldnt say.
The only knob I really tweak live at the club is the Low's. I sometimes only up the 2nd mids to give my bass an extra kick tho, I've noticed a better bassline in Tracks like Adam Sheridans - Supernova. Aside from club mixing, recording and doing stuff at home or in the studio when recording I only tweak the lows for bass also.
I will be moving to the 4d to use with the new Traktor Pro. So tweaking with the knobs on this mixer will actually do something. When we have headliners, I'll wanna bring this in too so they can have a go on it too. The difference between the 4d and the 92 also I have noticed is there is no 2nd mid. I am really hoping that it doesnt sound like the xone62 tho, I really dont like the way the xone 62 feels. IMO, it cuts the bass way too fast.

+1 on Rann and Ideals comments about mixing and cutting too, IMO, guess really it depends on the track and what your doing with it to make it sound differently. |

add the 'mixing' some true effects usage (not just echoes and flanges) and combine them with the level cuts and knob turning and when done effectively it will bring the sound/track/mix to another level and if done right should not even be noticeable and should sound like part of the track.
playing with the knobs does make for some cool pix tho :) |
Touche :) :) I kid you not that all DJs have OCD when it comes to the knobs on the mixer. Myself included. It just kinda comes natural to have your hands on the knobs. |

| I love my xone! I have so much control with the EQ's thanks to the extra mid. Perfect mixing guaranteed. |

1- so it looks like your doing something
2- relieves bordom when an 8 minute track is playing
3- tweaking the bass or mids.....cranking them up at the right timee to enhance (ruin) a track... it's usually doen when your mixing a track in....you don't mix the whole track in. sometime you just start with the mids and highs (vocal) and bring the bess in near the end of the mix when the track drops...or vice versa...
as mentioned, in some mixers, the crossfader/chanels are knobs and not sliders... |

#1 and #2 is exactly what i thought. theres a lot of people who have agreed with that and then a lot of people who are saying there is actual use for it.
if its for showing off as some of you guys have said then Alain is doing
"the no look, not listening to the head phones nob turn"
on the first picture.
