As a newbie.. Personally i would stay would away from ableton. If i had started off using ableton i doubt i would have kept with it. It's very complex if you're looking at all of it for the first time, let alone trying to mix on it.

Speaking out of my own experience, I first did some research on the web as to what mixing tracks really is. I think you can find some very good info on the sticky thread on this forum. Then, I got myself a copy of Traktor and ed around with it.
At first it may seem overwhelming seeing all those knobs, buttons, and faders but once you get a hang at what each of those do you'll be pretty much on your way. The only way to do this of course is by just getting some tracks and play around with the software.
