Steve Porter at Footwork Review (pg. 2)

No more extended sets. Clearly Steve Porter is at his best with the 2-3 hours that he prefers, and the FW crowd tends to start clearing out by 4 anyway, except at major special events like the last Danny Howells gong show.
I admit it, I'm not hardcore, and would so much rather do with a few hours of brilliant madness like last night and proceed to sleep (insert your own definition for "sleep") than stay up all night listening to someone struggle with filler tracks.

I understand that maybe he is being technical or concentrating but if he would look at the dance floor he would notice that people are not really moving. And the entire set (except for the very end) he looked like a sleeping robot. The odd bob here and there but the same dead expression on his face.
*Note - Porter later played a track that Evan G has also play. It was like night and day.

Well i wasnt there but ive been Evan play a bizillion times and ive never seen anything close to what you are saying you saw. Actually the first time I saw Evan play since i got back over xmas I was completely blown away by him! His mixing was tight, track selections were amazing and the dancefloor was going off.
As for the energy behind the decks, not everyone can jump around and go insane back there like Deko-ze, Jelo and those guys (plus he'd spill his beer if he did that ;) ). AND hes getting paid to DJ.... not dance around back there like a GO GO dancer....and like you said he WAS OPENING FOR PORTER! You cant throw done a banging bassy wobble fidgety set right before the headliner, so im assuming he toned things down a lil because of this.
Like I said, i wasnt there so i dont know, but the few sets i saw him play while i was home were ridiculously good......AND since i wasnt there i spoke to quite a few people who were just to find out how the nite went and they had nothing but really good things to say about about the nite and Ev's set |

I dont know about that. If I just wanted to hear music mixed together i would stay home and download some set off the internet. The dj is there to give you energy and make your night ing amazing. If it was just their job to dj then why do they make it so you can see them? I agree the opener shouldn't be throwing down banging bassy but be alive up there. Interact with the crowd and do smile some times :) |

Kudos to this girl. I had very low expectations but when I walked in I found myself surrounded by a cool deep house sound. Her set was constructed very nicely, very groovy and with some tunes here and there that pulled me onto the dancefloor.
Another great opener at footy :) - Cant wait to check out a techno set.

Went outside and when I came back things were finally picking up a bit. He smiled once or twice and was dancing around a bit. (Maybe since Porter was now in the booth).
I understand that an opener shouldn't be dropping bombs but knowing the pace that Porter is going to play I would think a dj could play something that gets the crowd really moving.

STEVE PORTER :crazy:
It was a night of crazy non-stop dancing - exactly what I wanted. Having to take a bathroom break was like serving a life long sentance in prision. Lots of funky tracks and some really high energy party tunes. I found the first half of his set was a little lighter, really fun, more upbeat, very funky. The later part of the set got a bit 'darker' (although thats not really the word)... I found myself dancing more heavy/stompy/lower but at a very fast pace. Still very fun with loads of energy.
By 2am I was dancing so hard that breathing seemed impossible. The whole dance floor seemed the same. It was mayhem. Everyone was having the time of their life. Lots of sillyness.
Im looking for two track ids
1) Lyrics 'Take my hand tonight, go ahead tonight' - this song resulted in my going bonkers and a smile that nearly burst my face
2) Blue Monday - New Order... what remix was it?
So great to see so many faces, some expected, and some a surprise. And some people were very missed, but we definately created some extra holes in the dance floor to make up for their absence.
Ps. I know people thought I was crazy for wearing shorts but I have ZERO regret. (Tight jeans and Porter do not mix)

Meh. I think I was too tired to really give him a chance but I wasnt really digging want I heard. Left after a track or two. But kudos... I would hate to follow porter.
Porter should have played another extended set... No one should have to follow a set like that |
I found Aleksandras set to be quite edifying to be honest. her set was so inspiring that she set the bar really high for the rest of the night. it was a complete 180 from when i heard her techno set at the acid lounge. its really quite astonishing how she can adapt into any environment. i will be perfectly honest, i think that she would be the perfect dj to open for Danny Howells (unless Danny wants to be a 1 man show again).
Evan, i found him to be average. I noticed too that he looked beat up behind the decks. he just looked like he was really hung over but for me it doesnt matter how animated a dj is, i care more for the sound they emit from the speakers. yes the music he played was a lot more banging than aleksandras but this does not constitute a "better" set. it was quite the opposite.
Porter, well what can you say? hes known to bang & party it out and he did just that. some tracks were a little too too much for me but he did deliver what i and the crowd were expecting. i prefered this set over his last set @ FW in 2008
Anas. i found it odd that they would book him. they should have had the same 3 djs from the previous party. i did not like what i heard from him. it was UNinspiring and very meh. i found myself at that point just socializing. how can someone continue the momentum after a porter set? im sure its quite challenging which is why i felt porter should have just closed the night.
Does FW record their events? They really should.
1 more thing, i was glad to see that inspite the horrific weather we experienced that night the club was pretty rockin. |

Agreed. I'm a huge fan of 2-3 hour peak time sets for the headliner. Most DJ's just do not know how to play longer than 3-4 and keep the set flowing. |

The 3 times I have seen you were the worst audience interaction I have ever seen with a dj (your myspace says"Yohan also loves to interact with the crowd, bringing a stage presence unhindered by restraints of social expectations and only full of love of music"). lol What interaction? What stage presence? I think I saw you look up at us maybe twice in the whole night. But you did stop the music and scream like a girl :). With no one screaming back of course because that was the only energy you gave us the whole night. You played amazing music and I do agree you have a love for music but you didn't do anything for the energy in the room and thus made people leave into rev. |
