His most famous track is probably "These Waves," featured on the first Northern Exposure compilation: YouTube.
Anyway, this guy made some really beautiful electronic music in the early '90s and apparently hasn't done a whole lot since then. Shame...

I've been wanting his eponymous album for a while now. It's pretty expensive though, so I haven't as yet shelled out. I'm sure GrimReaper will be straight in here to tell us he has three copies.
John Digweed was a huge fan of YAP and he opened that Essential Mix I put up a couple of weeks back with Daydream. When I was trawling for tracks for my Spaced mix I realised how many breaks producers have been inspired in some way by Young American Primitive. |

The whole early 90's US west coast scene based around San Francisco's ZoëMagik, Trip 'N Spin and Hardkiss labels, and Los Angeles' Exist Dance and C-Level has produced some of the finest ambient, breakbeat, deep house and trance music I've ever heard.
For example, California Dreaming is without a doubt my favourite compilation ever. It features tracks that sound so natural and somewhat carefree, with that optimistic atmosphere which is so rare in today's music. It's not just because of analog equipment, it's that unique musicianship these producers had which made their music so special.
YAP is one of those guys, and The Reality Of Nature from that compilation is IMO his best track. Of course, his self titled album is awesome as well. God, I feel so wistful of the good old days after listening to some of his tracks... |

Yep. There's lots of dark moody stuff now and lots of try-hard phony "uplifting" stuff, but not many tracks with that "carefree" feeling. |

| i have the YAP album, it wasnt that expensive, it cost me 25 pounds which at that time was around 45 bucks. i appreciate that's a lot for some people but if its something you will really treasure for years to come (as I have since I bought it), then I think its worth it |

Always loved YAP's relaxed sounds and ideas. For me it's been also alot of fun to spot the numerous dialogue samples he has taken from the 1960s TV show "The Outer Limits" and a few Alfred Hitchmovies.

Not sure what really triggered that gesture but I appreciate it highly. I was so miserable for never finding the album for a reasonable price and then out of the blue Greg Scanavino, YAP himself contacted me and Jan asking for our addresses. |
