Something tells me we figured that out, because I don't remember that happening much once we got our new computer in 1999. It was my brother's computer that we used, and I only got to use it during the summer when he wasn't at school. The rents decided to buy their son a new computer, and not the family, until 99.
It was a big deal because our original family computer we got in the early 90's, all ty as hell with Windows 3.1. We never had a PC with 95, we jumped all the way to 98. In my experience, 98 is still the best Windows, but thats MY experience, and I'm no programmer.

No joke, when my brother's computer did the whole connection thing, it was the LOUDEST thing possible. Like, frighteningly loud. And of course, you knew something ed up when you heard additional beeebeeepshhhhh noises that didn't sound like the ones before, and you probably connected at half the speed you were supposed to. (meaning, even SLOWER dial up)
And nothing makes me reminisce more about dial up than porn. Having to wait a whole hour to download a 50 second video that in the end turned out to be a shemale ing a horse, completely killing the excitement. And you'd probably watch it anyway just because you waited so ing long to download it, may as well get your times worth. |

| i marked 10 years, but now that i think about it, it must've been at least 15 years ago. i used dial up for bbs boards and newsgroups and compuserve... the world wide web wasn't worth back then. |

Probably around 8 years ago, and thank I don't need to go back. The UK was lagging badly behind some other countries in next-generation internet connectivity back then and 512kbps cable broadband had just been launched, so the flatmates at the uni campus were the first ones to subscribe.

IIRC you went to control panel -> system -> device manager -> properties on the modem. There was a slider in a tab somewhere.

I remember back in '93 my dad bout a 14 k modem... ROFL.
Its funny, he was a Pharmacist back then, and the Frys he worked at had just spent $1500 for a 9600 BAUD modem in '92 lololololololololololololol!!!!!!!
we were the back then man... we had a PowerMac 7100/66 with a (GASP!!!) 2x CDROM!!! LOL and we "maxed out" the computer with a WHOPPING 16 MB of RAM and a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE 250 MB hard drive. It had a BLAZING fast 80 MHz PPC 601. It had a HUGE 15" CRT 256 color monitor... lmao!!! Running Mac Os 7.1... me those were the days. |
