My new years resolution was to drink more.

So far, so good.

I quit smoking and I'm doing just fine. It was always just psychological with me I believed and I was right. The nic-fits I get are really just situational. Someone smokes on TV, and I'm dying to go outside for one. The Pavlovian responses are what I gotta deal with. I got a tube of lifesavers in the car for whan I get an itch there. Can't wait for spring so I can switch to spitting sunflower seeds out my window. I might break it next time I go to the guv patio. I've never been to the guv patio without lighting up. Can't imagine just going there to socialize.

Wow, good work Abercrombie. How long did you smoke for, and is this your first attempt at quitting?

I didn't start smoking until university. then I stopped after university for a few years. none of my entourage smoked, so no reason to. Then I moved back to Ottawa and Gatineau, where smoking was the norm, so took it up again there, cuz I almost felt left out.
It was nice smoking indoors everywhere, in every store, even while grocery shopping!!! I smoked again once back in Toronto because my boss did, so I brown-nosed there. Off again for a couple of years, then switched office buildings after HP shot down after they closed all of our Compaq offices. So yeah, so over 10 years total, and about 2-3 packs per week.

I must confess though... I did smoke half a pack this weekend at the Seneca Casino, because people were smoking everywhere indoors there at the tables, restaurants, so it was so irresistable! I did not buy any smokes to come back with me across the border, so I'm at least on the right track :)

So you started again on Saturday? I think that's more like taking a vacation than quitting. ;)

I don't wait until New Years to decide on how I want to improve myself or my life. Having said that, I did set several goals during the pre-winter months, and so far I believe I have followed through on all of them:

- Read more (check - tore through at least 15 books during Christmas vacation alone)
- Re-establish the regular workout routine I had before the cold came (check)
- Take up snowboarding (check)
- Finish all the condo work left hanging in '07 (check - in progress)
- Be more sociable and less shy (and how - I expected it to be harder than it really was)
- Eliminate sleep (OK, that wasn't actually a goal, but I've been doing a very good job of it)
- Improve the organization and reduce clutter at work and at home (check - not a single loose paper or receipt lying around except for a couple of notepads)

Only thing on the list I haven't done yet is to fix my incredible shrinking RRSP - very easy to procrastinate on since I know I'll be forced to do it by March anyway - but I have at least tentatively decided on a new strategy, so I'm giving that a half-check.
