This mix was actually created mid December and was going to be my end of the year mix and first Reflections since January of 2008. Every day it seemed I changed the order of the tracklist and it went through many changes since I had first started the mix. It ended up becoming such a big obsession to get things just right it leaked over into January and ended up being completely different from what I first had in mind.
I was quite nervous uploading a brand new mix. It has been over a year since I've fully worked on a Reflections mix and I always try as hard as possible to make sure everyone is as polished and well put together as possible. Having been a year my taste in music has changed a bit. More so I believe music is always evolving and it's hard to not to go down the different routes other DJ's have gone. I still remain as vigalante as possible by sticking to what I love. That deep and melodic progressive sound that borderlines on house and trance but never fully becomes one or the other but expresses what I love about both genres equally.
The opening track is a beautiful remix from M83 of Midnight Juggernauts Shadow's. The layered synths and vocoded vocals are constantly rising and building on top one another never letting go of you once it grabs hold. It's emotional and one of my favorite songs of all time.
Truly kicking things off is Itamar Sagi's One Million Oaks. A great track that his this very helpful static intro that I looped to ease off of Shadow's and build up momementum for the first 4/4 track. This is a great track all around and I can't wait to utilize this live and play around with the EQ's and effects. Bringing itself in next is a new Ozgur Can and AGS track. I've been very put off to alot of Ozgurs music lately only because personally I've never been a huge fan of minimal and I think Ozgur went a little too deep into that for my taste. I enjoy Ozgurs older sound like his remix for James Holdens A Break in the Clouds and this new track Music in Passion reminds me of those days.
I love Jody Wisternoff and I think almost everything he creates or remixes is usually gold. He has this create balance of creating tracks that you can dance your ass off too or lay down and relax too. This remix for Metaverse is another example of him hitting that balance. I could throw this track almost anywhere in a mix and it could work on all levels.
Up next is a return to form, in my opinion, for Sasha. Although I loved Mongoose and enjoyed some of his Emfire tracks I really missed that great lush sound that was all over Airdrawndagger and this remix and his latest Invol2ver CD really brought that back. I remember Junkie XL saying once if you decide to remix a classic or already great song the best possible thing to do is just to build on top of that and stay true to it's form. I believe Sasha did just that with this remix. I could go on forever about how much I love this track but just enjoy it for yourself.
Picking up the energy after the huge buildups in Couleurs is Dinka with Asylum. A fun and energetic progressive trance tune that reminds me of Jaytech without sounding too much like him. I think this would sound amazing on a nice sound system and especially during a live set and really look forward to using this. Following up into Asylum is an older vocal track by Dobenback titled Please Don't Go and on remix duties is Shawn Mitiska. Their's something about this track that I absolutely love. It could be the grooving bassline and simple but soft vocals but it just always hits the spot and couldn't help but throw this in here. Right when Don't Let Go ends Syncope - Elektrika's breakdown begins. I only utilized the breakdown because I really don't enjoy anything about where this track starts or ends because it has no buildup or follow up to such a beautiful breakdown which really is dissapointing so right when the breakdown ends Jaytech's Pyramid kicks in and if you know me all I need to say is enjoy Jaytech and all of his groove.
Starting to slow things down a little bit is Sasha's latest 3 Little Piggy's. A song that has so much going on but such a simple melody really showcases that you don't need that huge epic trance breakdown in order to be beautiful. Again pick up Invol2ver if you already haven't wink.gif Following Sasha is one of my current favorite Guy J with Esperanza (Club Mix). A great breakbeat/ambient tune that I thought was perfect to bring things down even more so I could flow right into Personal by Stars. I think this track has an amazing idea and I really want everyone to truly listen to the lyrics and understand how this song actually does apply to people who create personals. It's quite tragic but beautiful in it's own right.
Really hope you all enjoy the mix and I'm glad to be back with a new Reflections and will continue to bring you one each month as I used too.

this looks fantastic, tracks are right up my alley
listening now with lots o coffee on a rainy morning mmm
thanks!
edit: yep this was very nice, tracks are great. A couple of the earlier mixes could have been cue'd a bit better and in the mix longer; a couple of times a melody would fade and the next tracks main line would come in at the middle of a bar. But thats sort of nitpicking with a set like this which I quite enjoyed. Particularly like that guy j - esperanaza, sounds like a holden track when he's not off on some lame tangent :P |
