New Track - Please Help me with the Bassline

i posted a 2 minute clip of a new track i'm working on. So far i'm really digging it - i sampled vocals from the 1992 track 'cathy denis - irresistible'

i think everything is sounding pretty good for the most part, and i like my bassline, but it has no balls in the mix, i would appreciate some suggestions to really make it pop out in the mix to really give this track that funky groove. (no bull responses please)

had a really quick listen - good track - first thoughts are:

I like the composition. The sample is a classic and like what you've done with it.

You've got a problem with the kick - it's either the sample is noisy or there's a slight reverb on it. I've also heard it when incorrectly compressed. That was the first problem that immediately stood out. It could be the snare on the kick but I can;t tell - it sounds noisy.

There is also some timing issues with some of the percussion - it's not tight enough - could do with some clocking of samples or a matched groove tmeplate to the other parts.

As for the bass - it's too wet. The sound itself is fine, It just sounds like it's over affected and rather than clean in the sitting front and center of the stereo image, it's washing about above which causes a separation problem to the other elements.

I reckon it will sound better if you take the reverb/solve problem with the kick first, as that will let you truly hear the bass, then make the bass as dry as possible as see what it sounds like.

BTW, are you using the fx on the synths or sending plugins?

thanks dj rann, some great advice in there, and i'll try playing around with the things you suggested.

interesting, i wasn't even thinking about the kick at first, but it definitely focused my attention there now. The bass is definitely wet, and i was actually considering that problem earlier.

i'm using the fx on the vst's for this. Other than the compression.

Sounds good, except the bass sounds more like a mid bass, and I'm waiting for the main bass to come in. Try adding another layer with more sub frequencies and a better groove.

I agree with eldritch it needs more groove the bass sounds to static and sequenced try rolling the notes together so it feels like its flowing together or put a little swing on it. but you definately need another bass sound going on to get the groove going.

Can you tell me, what you mean by "better groove" or "rolling the notes together"? Or how to do that?
:conf:

Do you mean something like this:
(k is kick and b is bass)
k---k---k--- <--- the "boring" bass
--B---B---B-

k---k---k--- <---- the bass with the better groove
b-bbb-bbb-bb

Did I get it right?
Or did you mean something else?
Waza
Yes like that there is also loads of other things you can do like change the note length of each key and volume as well.

thanks for the further comments and suggestions...things eventually just come down to personal preference, perhaps the first bassline could be expiremented with as theres not much to it. I really like my second groove though, although simple, i think it fits the mood (just needs to be enhanced and braught out more as per the suggestions). Had a busy week, i'll probably end up playing around with things on the weekend and hopefully get it more intact.

The volume on the bass is a bit low, and I agree that there should be a layer with maybe a lower bass, because the whole time I was just expecting this thick bass to come in to add more funk and aggression. There are so many things you could do though... perhaps sidechain one of the bass layers, and slight porto?

I like it though, sound awesome!
