First question,
this song rocks. I have this thing with remixed 80s songs, I love them and wanna remix this one.
Does ANYONE have the vocals?

Second question, would it be illegal if for our next competition we did an 80s remix? I mean when 20+ years pass by are you still expected to contact the label and tell them? |

To remix, you have to pay a licensing and publishing fee, or work out a deal with the label relative to your album sales (assuming you're.. selling albums).
To do a cover, you just pay a one time fee unless you use any of the original track or something like that.
But if you're just doing it for a demo, myspace, or something like that, I'm sure it would be fine. They aren't going to hunt you down and sue. :P |

Ive done a bit of work on 80's music.... Somethin handy about the production values of that time, it's really easy to completely over-shadow the existing musical elements by just playing over it. You can eq out the (barely existent) low end, and subdue the high end as well. The vocals will still be sufficiently audible, and you can probably boost part of the vocal range safely as well so that it pops out a bit more.
Is it a hackjob? Sorta. Does it work well enough? If people are dancing to it, then I'd say yeah. Does the old song peek through? A little, but not enough to matter since the results is probably going to be an unofficial job. Just go for it, don't worry about the quality if you really want to do it.
Nice pick, btw. |
