Any famous DJ's coming to Austin? (pg. 3)

I need a significantly higher paying job to even think about overseas. Just like South America the only way I'll be seeing Europe is getting booked over there.
And before anyone asks me again about the China gig..I'm guessing the damn think fell through. There went my credibility. |

Jojo's a nice dude n all and has good intentions, outside of business I never had any problems with him. What up man.... I have to argue a small point. From 2000-2002 (and off and on in 03 and 04) Slow Motion brought a few artist through Element. Which, was the best venue in Austin for electronic music. I was the promoter when it opened. We would regularly have 800-1500 people on Friday-Saturday night. We booked Oakey, we broke Quivver in Texas, Sam Mollison (Live) twice, Deep Dish, we broke Steve Lawler in Texas, Hybrid, James Zabiela, we broke Infusion in Texas. Not to mention we hosted the Official Delta Heavy After-party from 1:30-5am, in which Sasha and John both both hung out for a couple hours to meet fans and friends alike.... 1200 people showed up from the music hall. Damn, that was back when we had "The Sound" on MEGA 93.3 (those were the days!!!)... then they went Top40.
Then we move to Texture... The best "underground" venue in Austin. We broke Pappa, Sander, Cass and Medway in Texas. Burridge and Ali Shirazinia (Deep Dish) came through... a bunch of house djs. All the while we constantly rotated local and regional DJs into the opening slots regardless of "crew affiliations".
The line-ups were based on the evening as a whole... from the time the door opened until the lights came on. It was a journey and I wanted every paying customer to have a memorable experience and cutting edge music (exclusive Austin bookings... you had to come to Austin, I would not book an artist that would be playing in Houston or Dallas the following night). From the ID checker at the door, to the bar staff and management to sound and lighting. If a opening DJ banged out 138 BPM hard house before Jimmy Van M or another guest played the main slot... I had no problem warning them that they were "opening" or "warming" up for the headliners. Let the headliner play the Big tunes. If they ignored my warning... I would simply kick them off the decks. A FEW DJs thought I was an , but guess what? The people paying cover did not pay to hear 145bpm trance at 10 or 11pm played by some douche. That said, some of people's most memorable sets were locals/regionals opening up... In fact, there are a few DJs that were able to use those "lowly" opening slots to catapult their DJ careers...
I can honestly say the I paid DJs what I agreed to pay them... The night of the gig (whether I made or lost money). AND, I returned cover to a few people who I promoted the event to, and did not like what they heard.
I lost a lot of money breaking "stars" before they were "Super Stars"... I would not trade that for anything... accept to go back and do it again :) At the end of the day, the money did not matter, b/c the money will come and go, but the experience would be there for a lifetime.
End of rant... yadda yadda... If I were 100% in the game like I was 4-5 years ago, this thread would not have been started... b/c every electronic enthusiast in the USA would ALREADY know who was going to be playing in the ATX in the next couple weeks. THAT is how things were promoted... Most people did not care "who" was playing, they just saw the logo and knew that it was going to be quality regardless of who was mixing the records.
Not the end yet... I think SA is very promising. Austin will make a comeback....
One last thing... I apologize for Slow Motion involvement in partnerships with other promotion companies/venues where paying music fans left dissatisfied. I liked Sky and we had alot of memorable events there... JZ, Digweed, Sasha, Burridge, Jimmy Van M, Sandra Collins, Sander... But that chapter is closed, just like the ones mentioned above... and the ones before that... Red Room, Caucus Club, Twist, Austin Music Hall.... All gone... Expect something new... and hopefully, the quality will cause you to support it.

Some of the best parties I attended while in Austin were prepared under the SLM umbrella, they where all great parties in my opinion.
From what I recall, M.A.N.D.Y was the best of them all because it was a small party (private) on a wednesday night but nobody gave a damn and only a select handful of people knew it was going on
Lance & the kid from denver i forget about was also a highlight and perhaps my first party ever in texas. i will miss the texas vibe, but you guys have to open up to what's happening up north and in europe...
i say we kill trance in texas for good... |

I forgot about MANDY... that was a great night. We were not expecting many people on a Wed night, but it was fun as hell.
The DJ from Denver is Little Mike.
I'm semi-retired with a kid on the way... you all have fun :) |

Damn I missed so many great parties back in the day but once I got clued in it was great. SMM parties rocked, from Infusion AND James Zabiela in the same night to M.A.N.D.Y at Sky and others I will never forget. Damn shame though I wasn't able to support the scene as much as I wish I could have from 01-04...
Let me know when tickets go on sale for the Firehouse nights and I am there!!! |

I very humbly stand corrected Lance, you have been instrumental in bringing alot of the more respected talent to Austin, unfortunately I never had the opportunity to attend. I do hope to do so in the near future. |
