mixer problem [master cue distortion]

so my friend got his first mixer, numark m2
he's encountering this problem:
whenever he switches to cue the master, at a certain point it gets really loud and distorted, then all signal is lost, just shuts off
anyone have any opinions as to what could be causing this?
the things connected to it are a vestax turntable, and the master out goes to a soundblaster sound card.
