Hiya all,
Here’s something I’d like to share / expose with you all - I’m open to questions / suggestions / feedback.
www.spiralking-music.com
I've actually set up a label now... but call me mad, I think I’ve found new way of doing this for the sort of people who don’t know much about the scene or frustrated that they can’t find a way onto the ladder. I’ve got release experience – see some of the workings and learning more day by day being helped by artists involved also (we’re all in the same boat!)
Here’s the bullet points of the labels system:-
· I don't take a % off the sales (the portals take their cut of course, but all the rest of the sales income would go to the artist with the source accounting shown openly without the artist even asking for it)
· I only take 10% of publishing (which means I only get cash if successful) - and I have decent publisher and always looking for more.
· Basically half altruistic, half realism - and I’m happy chasing after labels and contacts for these guys/gals who *might* not be able to have a go or know where to start and help with press/promotions/building profile and presence.
· That's tip of the iceberg, I’ve bespoke coded the site to include a management system so that I can track people surfing, and keep notes on emails sent etc... a complete label management system so that I can deal with high numbers of artists/DJ/producers.
· There's audio on there also for producers/publisher to access to hear snippets and a place for DJs to securely download high quality versions of work being released. Took me ages to sort secure downloading and audio streaming for the DJ section – it also includes a process where if a DJ downloads a track the system will flag them for feedback when they next return.
· Lots of cool little features that enable artists to even link to snippets and look professional using automated web page code - my aim being to give them a platform to get out there using known avenues (and anything we can drum up) without being arsed raped by the industry (my lawyer works for MGM Australia) - so have very open, clear contract that lets the artist say 'No' should anything come up that they think is dodgy and be flexible enough to treat every situation as having unique needs.
· For the actual artists, initially I’ve been approaching all the favourite labels that the artists like – even though I can release, doesn’t mean I have too – it’s just an option the artists can take.
It’s early days, and I’m recovering from coding the thing, so please forgive any glaring mistakes ;)
If people would like access to the secure areas – please message me with what area you’d like to see and I’ll set up a temporary account so you can have a look at how it works.
Have to thank you all so far for the ‘on board beatings’ to keep my head real :)
