Ursula 1000 returns from journeys into outer space with his new studio album via ESL, an epic collection of psychedelic sonic sorcery entitled,
Mystics!
Zig-zagging further away from the cheeky vintage breakbeat-rhumba of previous albums, this time the Brooklyn beat-wizard ventures into tougher and
more angular territory: beats banging harder and bass popping louder.
Drawing from a variety of new influences and collaborators, Ursula 1000 delivers lethal doses of dirty booty-breaks with tracks like “Rump” featuring MC Tee Double, gothic sexcapades with “I.C.O.M.E.” featuring sex-kitten vocalist Rochelle Vincente Von K, electro-dancehall with “Step Back” featuring Jamaican toaster Sista Widey, and disco-funk filth with “Star Machine” featuring jazz-breaks producer Mocean Worker. At once playful and dangerous, Mystics is a cry to the stars!
Ursula 1000 toured heavily in 2008, taking in Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Romania and the Netherlands. Festival dates included the unique EOLICA festival in Tenerife, Spain, and BC's Shambhala Music Festival located deep in the British Columbia mountainside.
The music of Ursula 1000 has been highly sought after for television commercial use (Adidas, Kellogg’s, Sex In The City) and he has been tapped for remixes by Felix Da Housecat, Thievery Corporation, and Nicola Conte, among others. The base price on the Ursula 1000 CD catalogue has recently been reduced.
ESL Music’s URSULA 1000 is the alter ego of Brooklyn, New York based producer/DJ Alex Gimeno. His albums and mix sessions have taken on a
broad scope of retro tinged spy grooves, bumping latin disco funk, hints of post punk electro go-go, sleazy glam rock…And he never stops evolving.
You can hear it in his remixes for the likes of Quincy Jones, Felix Da Housecat, The Faint, Fort Knox Five to a slew of television remodels for
themes to Seasme Street, The Powerpuff Girls, The Incredibles and Yo Gabba Gabba. Scenes for Sex And The City, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty popped even more with a helping of a little Ursula as have campaigns for At&T, Samsung and Adidas.
His collaborations with Dr. Luke, Shag, Cristina, Los Amigos Invisibles, Misty Roses, Federico Aubele to name a few brought forth sheer magic on the three albums, The Now Sound of Ursula 1000, Kinda Kinky and Here Comes Tomorrow. All Systems Are Go Go and Ursadelica showed the world his
DJ skills and ear for the finest in hip shaking groovers. Undressed had it all re-imagined by electronic’s finest-Deekline, Ladytron, product.01, malente and more.
While travelling the world DJ-ing at places like Fabric, The Big Chill Festival, Shambhala or even at his home residency at APT, he takes in all his expe-riences and turns out his turn ons into a psychedelic brain stew.
And from this brew we bring you Mystics. This 12 track album returns from journeys into outer space giving us an epic collection of psychedelic sonic sorcery. Zig-Zagging further away from the cheeky vintage breakbeat rhumba of previous records, this time the Brooklyn beat-wizard ventures into tougher and more angular territory: beats bang-ing harder and bass popping louder. Drawing from a variety of new influences and collaborations, Ursula 1000 delivers lethal doses of dirty booty-breaks, gothic sexcapades, electro dancehall and disco-funk filth.
Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada's breakbeat scene today. After over a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound that's become Chu's rallying call - and it's one that crowds answer faithfully. Whether it's at his residencies at Toronto's legendary Breakfest events, The Make It Funky Jams, or the large one-off shows that Toronto boasts. In a city renowned as one of North America's largest party scenes, Chu has played alongside the worlds finest, allowing him to develop his own distinct style of breaks. Chu's sets can vary from hard beats to melodic funky down tempo sounds, but always remains a crowd mover. The born and raised Torontonian began spinning in London, Ontario while taking his undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology at The University of Western Ontario. Chu quickly garnered attention at local parties, leading to gigs in Toronto, including the Dose event in the summer of 1999 when he was asked to fill in for Barry Weaver for his second appearance in the city. He so impressed organizers that Chu was then asked to play the 14,000 plus crowd at the annual Dose Freakin Halloween event later that year, and as since become a mainstay for Toronto's largest party companies, like Metro Productions (Kickit and Out of Hand), Lifeforce Industries (Dose, Syrous and Renegades), Empire, and Liquid Adrenaline. As of late Big League Chu has found himself working on tracks again in the studio so keep your ears to the ground on upcoming new beats.
The Phat Conductor is one of Toronto's leading breakbeat exports, wreaking havok on turntables, laptops and projectors in North America, the UK and Europe. Old School, Nu Skool, Home School... it doesn't matter. With an ear for the future and an eye on the dancefloor the man behind Ice-9 brings you lush, organic electronics, funky bass grooves and a live performance to tell your grandkids about!
