Sheesh. This is more like the depression '09 world tour. Try this route instead: If your plans are to go South to Mexico, start on the other side of Lake Michigan and go through Milwaukee... then Chicago... then uh, you're ed after that anywhere you go until you get to TX. Maybe get a plane ticket in Chicago to Dallas. Rent a car in Dallas, then go through Austin (don't miss that place) and San Antonio. By the time you get to San Antonio you'll get sick of all the mexicans and want to go back to Dallas anyway.

Going to have to agree with everything here. Not to insult those cities, but they aren't exactly tourist destinations if you know what I mean. Chicago is the cultural capital of the midwest; that should be your prime city to visit, not Louisville.

And driving through Mexico? Bad idea. All that needs to be said.

Why the hell would you go to all these crappy places?

If you don't know people, aren't in a car with mexican plates, or have cash to bribe your way out of trouble you need to stay away from the Mexican Border. Laredo is the largest plaza (trafficking area) where 45% of all mexican trucks pass through and you'll be damned if you think the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas don't rule the streets.

I remember driving through mexico with no problems what so ever:conf:

I've done it sure. But that was years ago. I had friends who went to see Lee Burridge in Reynosa a few months ago, and the party got held up and everyone robbed at gunpoint by the maņosos. So its like 50/50

Stop at 4th Street Live in downtown Louisville. It's right off the expressway. Lots of nice bars, shops and restaurants...a fun little detour in the middle of your trip. And there are plenty of hotels to stay the night after you get drunk. ;)

This kid is lying out his ass. Detroit is not on the way to Waterloo. Waterloo is parallel to Detroit in Michigan and out of the way by an hour or two.

Hes just ing with us. He is probably with a firm looking for people who can debate well and hire them to help the GOP win back congress in 2010 or something even more far fetched then driving to Mexico with anything less than a APC.

Just to address some comments:

Yah I was doing a little reading on Mexico, apparently the Marines arn't allowed to vacation there anymore. None the less the reason I am heading south is warm weather and the North American Travel Initiative WHTI. The period for travel without a passport is in June, after that I'll need to apply for a passport, which can take a while to obtain (although I'm consider getting one before I go). Sort of sad I suppose, not even having a passport.

As for why stay in mexico over the Southern US (since I'm travelling primarily for warmer weather (like warm). I'd like to just go somewhere else, somewhere where the native langauge isn't English, give me an excuse to learn more spanish, and see the part of North America often neglected. I'm really into pyramids and ancient cultures, and mesoamerican culture interests me (regardless of how barbaric it was in regard to human sacrifices and bloodsports).

I'm not too concerned with criminal elements - I get along with them as well as I do police - everyone is a regular person, it is just what they do in life. I don't have links to organized crime, although I think a lot of people may come into contact with criminal elements through friends of friends, family members who were the black sheep, etc.. lots of people drink, and in Canada a lot of people smoke pot, so a link to the hells or otherwise often isn't that far away - I dare say even for some police. I'm also not too far from the old mafia heartland, I grew up in a city with a three or four major gangs etc... so while I wouldn't say I have a criminal past, I've been around stuff, in my days in highschool people war gang colours in some schools until they were banned.

Whether it is M13 or otherwise I'm not too concerned that way. As for ending up in jail or dead in Mexico - its not my plan but life is what it is. I understand a lot of the elements in mexico, so I'd understand if I got killed down there. I'm not out to disrupt or cross lines - or steal anyones girl though, and I'm not DEA or CIA so I'm not concerned that way. As long as I mind my own business and respect people, I can only hope things are ok.

As for louisville - ft. knox is right near there, although I'm considering saving memphis for the way back and driving straight through jackson to the coast, then taking the gulf into texas and to brownsville and into mexico. As for what is in Nashville (big time country city no?) and memphis (graceland - elvis media icon of the 20th century) Detroit is just on the way, I've been there before it aint that bad, actually the people are sorta nice. Most americans I've met before are pretty nice people. As for latins, I generally get along with the ones at the radio station alright, I understand them - and their extremity they are whole people.

All DoD personnel are banned from going unless approved by their chain of command or offical business. They don't look for people in the "CIA or DEA" or "somebody taking another person girl" Ransom. If you look like $$$ you have a higher chance of something happening ot you. A TA in the westcoast section had his brother kidnapped a few months ago. I live near the border of mexico in AZ. I used to go to Mexico all the time just to go to a certain bar. I don't go anymore for any reason.
