Good monitors to buy for a decent price?

I'm a major "bang for the buck" guy and I'm interested in buying some new monitors. My old ones have been abused by my DJing (no lectures please!)

I'd like some active speakers....under $600 for the pair would be great but I highly doubt I can get some quality monitors that cheap.

recommendations?

I myself have recently bought the Tascam VL-A5 and have found them to be quite nice. The wooden enclosure is certainly welcome and it produces a decent bass response for it's price range.
I believe they're retailing for under $600 in the US.

Other models you can look into are the Yamaha HS-50M / Roland DS-5 or even the Tannoy Reveal 5A.

I suggest that prior to purchasing your monitors you shortlist a few brands and models and listen to them at the dealer's place. Don't forget to take along high quality mp3 / wav's of the tracks that you know inside out and try to listen for subtle details that you possibly haven't heard before on normal PA systems.

my money's going towards a pair of KRK Rokit 6's. crisp flat response (except for a lil pushiness in the low-mids) and decent bass too.
i'm told the 8s are event better

You might be able to find some Yamaha HS80Ms for that price if you look around (eBay?). If not, the street price for a new pair is about $700+tax/SH -I'd recommend saving another $100 or so and buying them new.
