Picking a BPM

So, I have a track that sounds great at 100, 140 and 174 BPM..which should I choose?

Have you ever encountered a dilemma like this?...how did you solve it?

Average 'em and go with 138? Make 3 versions (downtempo, dance, DnB)?

I usually tweak the tempo as part of the finalization of most of my songs because, once I finalize the bass line and other rhythmic elements, I find that sometimes it needs to be picked up to give it more energy/drive, or slowed down to help it groove better.

Context is very important.

Well, its supposed to be a darkstep track. but its turning into something Weird and Expirimental. The style i was going for was akin to Black Sun Empire, but i just played it at 100 tempo and i started to drool..lol. That seems to be a weakness for me, the slower i play something the better it sounds o0.

Here is a short clip of the song..its still being worked on of course, no matsering yet :D

160 BPM

I sometimes start with a slower BPM, and then add one or two BPM when the track is almost finished. Nets interesting results. Or ill drop a BPM or two and the tracks character changes a bit and makes more sense. I usually start between 124-126 BPM.

I usually start at around 136 bpm then once i have my main melody i'll just check to see if it sounds better at a slower or faster temp.

My current project is 136 bpm and my last one was 136bpm.

But I make mostly trance music.

if it sounds good at 140 stick with that, imo its nearest the heartbeat of a dancing type a dude (if hes in well shape that is).

I use 141.618033988749894848204586834365638117720 bpm because it's a danceable beat that includes the golden ratio. ;)

Well, I guess it matters if you think people will like music more when it synchronizes with their bodily functions.

I never produce above 131BPM anymore, no idea why. I think I fell in love with the more progressive sound, I dont think full-on trance and fast melodies is my bag anymore :conf:
