Working on drum loops

Until today I've been mostly grabbing drum samples from various sources, and altering the timbre through EQ, compression, reverb, etc. to get the sound I want out of each sample, and throwing together a loop.
Overall they sound pretty good, but are their further steps I should consider taking? Is there any virtue towards trying to get them to all sound like they came from the same kit? Having some sort of noise/grain timbre compressed through all of them? :conf: |

Depends on how far you go with your projects, IMO.
If you have completed entire arrangements using those drum loops, then you have a reason to 'perfect' your drums. However, if you're not finishing full, detailed songs, then you're wasting your time. Particularly since there's a chance that you'll want to change some aspect about your drums' texture later. Double-work is teh debil. And if you're focusing on something that the average 1st time listener probably wont notice or care about, well... there ya go.
As for whether or not they sound like they come from the same kit... IMO this doesn't impact the quality of your songs for better or for worse. Only seems applicable to me if you have an overall vision for the style of the song, and the drums need to fit that style (like, a surf-rock sound, or whatever).
In short, don't sweat the those minor details unless they're the only details left to sweat. :) |

Compressing them all together makes for a good 'mess of hats' kinda sound. But it depends on the style you're going for. Basically whether or not you want to be able to distinguish each individual hihat.
Something worth mentioning is FXPansion Guru. It's a great percussion VSTi. It has its flaws and annoyances, but it's the best I've found. NI just came out with something similar that looks promising. |

| Yeah i wouldn't compress my percussions, i just eq them to fit the track and leave it at that. |

| Alright, sounds fine to me then. Sometimes it seems like various listenings sounds somewhat different each time. Will leave that to mastering I suppose. Thanks! |
