View this Thread in Original format

I was bored, started recording, couldn't decide what direction to go in...was kinda "LOST" in what I wanted to do...and came up with this 40+ minute semi mini-mix. Woulda been longer but Michelle called. :p

If I made any mistakes...oh well!

BTW, huge fan of all the tracks in this mix...prob why I'm OK with it enough to pass it along.

Oh yeah, I ran a hard limit filter across it for percieved loudness.

Thanks for your support!

teehee. Just kidding. But just bumping this because I would like some feedback...even if from one person!

Think I need to get new headphones after this one though. Out of tune or something. Bass in track 4 sounds fine through them, but on two different receivers (with good subs) I've listened to it through, the depth of the bass just isn't there...

I will download this since I know how it feels to be ignored on TA :(

before I even listen to it (I don't know what genre it is) but you said its about 40 minutes and 8 tracks. While thats not as bad as, say, 7 minutes per track, I'd suggest one thing you can do is to try to get it down to 3-4 (which is usually what I aim for)

Lots of people release mixes, and I've realized that it improves your reviews if you keep them interesting :) (will post back after I listen)

I liked most of the songs. The mixing was fine, although a bit slow.

I have to say, I did not like the flow of the mix though. It kind of bounced back and forth between genres (techy stuff, progressive, and melodic) and didn't really end up going anywhere.

Also it abruptly ended. I know you said someone called you so you had to cut it short, but if it was me I would redo the whole set ( I would never release something I felt was unfinished)

I been bumpin 08. Paul Keeley - King Scrubby (Original Mix) for a couple weeks now Dave.... Good mix!

I'll have a listen to it again in the AM, left my headphones at work.
DaveT
Yeah, I know, the flow is janked. :p I basically said so in my original post!

It's not a mix that's meant to take serious when it comes to programming.. As I said in my original post as well, I like every track a whole lot and thought what the hell, I'll upload it. A large part of the reason why it goes in different directions other than be just not being able to really decide where to go with it is that it was largely made up of tracks I just recently picked up (though not all just released) and I was trying to focus on playing those back so I could get as familiar with them as possible while mixing harmnically as possible..why I went from the Umek track to the Darren Tate track...both were ones I just picked up (though the DT track has been out for months)....never would go between those two in a serious mix, hehe.

Lesson I have learned here? Don't upload a mix just for fun!! hehehe

Anyhow, I shoulda been a bit more specific and mentioned that I was mainly looking for feedback with the mixing and harmony more than anything...

Which leads me to my question: When you say it's a bit slow, do you mean the length of the transitions or the BPM? Actually play most of the tracks at a higher BPM than they were produced at. Think only one track is slower. I'll chuckle if it's because of the transition lengths. I have actually been trying to slow them down a bit after a few people said they thought my transitions were too fast (usually the faster/more powerful the mix is going, the faster I do transitions to keep the energy up). Maybe I'm taking what you said the wrong way...just lemme know. I'm all ears. I want to learn, get better, etc. I have a ways to go and am not blind to the fact. :)

Thanks for your feedback. Honest and direct. Not fluffy fluff like some people do on here.
jonmitz
Yeah I meant length of transitions, and length songs are played at. You can make the total length of the transition longer but it gets exponentially more difficult without making it sound bad.

Forgot to mention this, and it's pretty important, there is no "proper" way to mix, but personally I choose to stay away from playing a song for its entirety (I get both compliments and complaints for doing this). Some songs are created in such a way you can only mix it a certain way without it sounded like crap.

Some people download a mix to hear a mix, and some people download a mix to hear the songs. There are people in between as well.

I've found that playing in on a club system makes most transitions easier since it's harder to tell those small melodic differences that might clash.
DaveT
OK, thanks.

A couple areas I've been trying to focus on is harmonic mixing (since I never did key all my tracks until a couple months ago, hehe) and the length of the tracks.

I used to average about 10 tracks per hour...used to play too much of each track.

Right now I try to do 12-14 per hour...like to be closer to 14 (or above). I try to look for a spot to get ouf of a track within a phrase or two after the main buildup/breackdown/whatever. But I don't' want to be PvD and do 5-10 second rush-felt transitions.

But I know what you mean. Some tracks feel like they do go on just a tad too long, but how it's built just makes it difficult to transition out of into the next track. Or sometimes it's how the next track is built at the beginning...gotta wait for the right spot.

In comparison, Armin, A&B, Ferry, averages about 12 per hour. Then there's SvD who averages 18-20 per hour.

Thanks for your feed back. It's seriously appreciated.

Nice one Dave ! good to hear :)

gonna dl the mix now
DaveT
hehe...wanna point out it was Bjorn who called me out on the harmonic mixing issue...none of you all this time called me out on it until he did in like October....rest of you suck!

Thank goodness for Mixed in Key...if I had to go back and key the 550+ tracks I had the time in my Ableton library by hand, would have prob just given up lol. Now upto 690 tracks in my Ableton library (rest are on a seperate hard drive) ...didn't realize I had that many (in a ton of cases, I end up buying a couple difference mixes of a track, so it's no where near 690 unique tracks). When I get my new laptop in a couple weeks, gonna reorganize my library and weed a ton of them out.

I've spent wayyyyyy too much money on tracks in the last four or five months.
