At least you guys can joke about it. I know a bunch of people (usually older) who will act offended at the joking around then go right ahead and talk about how the black people in their english class can't speak correctly.

It's the subtle racists that are the worst.

Linguistic prejudice != Racism

Even though Ebonics is a quite peculiar movement...

Look me in the eye and tell me that isn't racist.

Everybody has racist thoughts. Shut the up if you try telling me that you haven't had even the slightest racial thought cross your mind over the last couple of months. You're lying to me and to yourself in a paltry attempt at saving face. Just because we all have them doesn't necessarily make us racists. I may think of a joke, but that's all it is; a joke. I don't support the ideas nor stereotypes behind it.

What? you think everyone has racist thoughts and occasionally expresses it with drunken abuse in the street? Perhaps you've just revealed something about yourself there.

You need to post a pic, first.

But, in any case, you're oversimplifying the issue. There's a complex background to those claims, and you even put it in the proper context in your first post.

The claim is that "black people in their english class can't speak correctly", and that says a lot more than you imagine it does. For some unknown reason, we all learn how to speak very early in life, but it's as if none of us spoke 'right' until we're properly taught in school (and people buy it, wth?!). Black Vernacular English, which is the language these folks learnt at home differs significantly more than the language you (I assume) learnt at home for historical reasons.

I bet that, if a white child adopted by speakers of Black Vernacular English went to school, and spoke "Ebonics" in the classroom, your friends would criticise him just as much.

This issue needs to be simplified. In the case of racism the backround of a particular person does not matter. This is a case of racial prejudice which is also a form or racism.

Although the quote specifically talks about english class that does not make the comment not racist because it singles out a group of people based on their race.

Look deeper into my original comment. I've laughed at chappelle's show like a lot of people did. However, we have all heard those side comments that imply racism. That is what I meant by subtle racism.

Wait, just so I can be sure we're talking about the same thing, what's the difference between racial prejudice and racism? I see no difference here

Are you telling me that they'd make no fun whatsoever of rednecks whose English is far from being the one taught at school?

I understood what you meant. I just pointed out that, although there's a correlation in that particular case between a group of people and a dialect, so to speak, the issue here is not the fact that they're "black", but how they speak English.
