I haven't listened to his Nocturnal show in over a year, so I was completely surprised at the start of his set. Real straight up electro house. Then he got more melodic before I left.
Definitely a nice guy. Signed one of my rare vinyls in my collection. Tekara - Breathe In You :D |

so what to say what to say.. i've had some mixes from matt darey way back in 2001 and i enjoyed them immensely back then (and even now they sound pretty damn good even though they're kind of dated, doesn't bother me one bit).. so when i saw he was spinning, i figure i should really catch him, see what he's up to now.. i guess it's my fault because i haven't kept up with matt's newer style recently, so when he came on.. it was really not what i expected!
granted, all artists have to evolve in their craft in their own way, so i guess i shouldn't be surprised, but this was not the trance legend i was hoping for, so yah i guess you could say i was kind of disappointed IMHO. but i also wish i caught zack's set because i heard he was real good (but i had to work until midnight so i got there a little before 1). i ended up leaving sometime past two to catch another friend who was spinning at moomia (and actual trance).. see, by then most of my TA buddies had left also so i figure let's see what else is happening in this big city!
well i guess the highlight of my evening was getting to chill and talk with zack, he's a very cool kat and though i seen him spin a few times before, i never got to talk to him for one reason for another. i hope MADE books him again, if not for his own headlining set, then at very least for an opener.. he knows how to get the crowd warmed up from what i heard and missing him spin ended up being almost as disappointing as the sound from matt's mixers being as way different than what i had grown to love. starsoprano even called it "dirty whore house" :) very robotic and non-emotional (all the elements that trance doesn't lack, so what i love about that, and although it made a comeback later, it was too little too late). |

I was one of the few people that expected a set like that from Darey. I was kinda hoping that he was one of those DJs that spun nothing like his radio show, and would suprise us with a trance set. Instead it was a 2 hour and 30 min mix of tracks from his recent 5 Nocturnal shows. Fedde Le Grand style. Darey is not a bad DJ and knows how to interact well with the crowd, but the electro house left alot of people confused who were expecting trance.
On a more positive note, Zack was allowed to spin for the final 30 min and totality destroyed the housey electro vibe with Tiesto - Lethal Industry :D |

haha, that was fun! I was pretty toasty at that point in the night...thought about bringing it down a bit for a sec, and kind of said " it" :D
All in all though, I had a blast. Last night was my first time playing at Cielo, and I gotta say, it was pretty damn cool....amazing set up, sound system, lights, crowd...all top notch. Definitely can't wait to play there again.
Darey was a cool guy. I definitely wasn't expecting him to go the electro route. But he did get a little more melodic and trancey as the night wore on.
Kerrine got took a bunch of pictures and videos, which she'll have up in a few. |

Haha, I seem to have thought the complete opposite of everyone else as far as Darey was concerned.
Zack, loved your opening set especially that last song you played before you and Darey switched. What was that?!?!?! And the song you played the one before that, that was awesome too!
Ok, so Darey. I absolutely ing LOVED the first half hour of his set. It was the best dirtiest electro house I have ever heard! Oh my god, it was amazing. Tracklisting anyone? Anyone know what say those 1st 5 or so songs were that he played?
I didn't have any expectations either way going into Darey. I assumed it would be more housey since it was at Cielo. Then Tom told me to expect trance and I was a little disappointed to hear that.
Then, I was COMPLETELY blown away by the beginning of Darey's set. It was AMAZING, holy . I had been planning on leaving early because I had work early, but once he started playing like that I vowed to stay until the end.
And then... after about the first half hour... he completely lost me. I left around 2 and went home, got enough sleep, and went to work sober. Lol
It was great seeing the usual peeps, Alyssa and Drew, Mike, Lisa Marie and her hubby, Vinny, Andrew, Nick and his lovely friend, Aleks, Franny, Tom, Zack and Keryn, Ana and Jeremy, and Phil.
Funny line of the evening... Asking Andrew if he'd met my friend Franny, "What?! A tranny?!?!?"
Pictures to follow. |

interesting to read this, my boyfriend just photographer Matt Darey and Jes in Vegas on Wednesday and the opener was a house DJ.. Chris Garcia.. who ended up playing an opening trancey kinda set for Matt.. who then came on and played the "dirty-whore-electro-house" that i am seeing described on here!!! LOl - mikey explained it the same way as you erica! hahaha...
well interesting to read. I figured he was just playing to the Vegas crowd.. so its funny to see he did the same in NYC.
I listen to his podcast occasionally I actually like it a lot, i would have went to this show if i wasnt workin, etc. oh well.
pics looks great! and yea, matt darey is like really really tan... |

maaaan. this makes me wish i could have closed it out!!! :( but hey, ZACK, man u got to show the crowd YOUR versatility so i think thats great. I thought you did a GREAT job as an opener and you definitely built it up NICELY. I really hope MADE asks you to open for more events in the future :)
Darey was "interesting" to say the least...his opening track was CRAZINESS...then he got repetitive and just LOST me, ill admit he *is* versatile i suppose but its just not my thing. I have never heard him or his radio shows, and I was trying to get a feel for the type of genre he spun, and normally its easy cuz most djs are more consistent, really confusing! lol. at one pt his style reminded me of David Guetta (of which/whom i am sooo *NOT* a fan at ALLL, so that was it!!!! HAHA :p)
then again, i wasnt feeling that well the whole night either so that just added to the weirdness, haha.
Great seeing everyone tho, that really made the night fun, and Cielo is still a kickass venue :D |
