Exactly, the UN can only do (and urge :p) so much. Sovereignty still plays an important role in the contemporary world and, in the end, this is not much more effective than the Pope telling everyone to stop fighting and ditch Astrology.
Astrology is still a great way to pick up chicks, and wars still break out every now and then. |

the UN is a bureaucratic tunnel organization for the most part....but its organizations along with NGO's that participate are key in getting world figures and statistics, and atleast bring awareness to problems that would otherwise go under the radar. Also their aid is very important to alot of people. Their peacekeepers are very helpful in maintaining buffer zones in places like Cyprus.
but it is not the police force by anymeans, that is for NATO.
and US pwns NATO, it even shares nukes with nukeless NATO countries to confirm that presence.
EDIT: as shown in recent events in Kyrgigistan sp?, Russia is making efforts to stand up to Nato, it will be interesting to see if there is a shift of balance in the policing aspect over the coming decades. |

The UN can go off.
If your religious beliefs and convictions are so weak that you need to get the UN to help you maybe it's time you convert or learn a bit more about your religion and not be such an insecure tool.
If it weren't for the hundreds of gaping theological holes, the bull insecurity and the idiot figure heads of Islam there wouldn't be a need to show them so much special attention all the time.
I bet most Muslim politicians that lobby for Islamic "rights" and other bs are probably the people with the least faith among Muslims in the first place. Insecurity is a personal problem, leave it out of world politics thank you very much. |

Bingo.
99% of people who rant about the UN don't like the General Assembly for representing an agglomeration of views in the developing world rather than the developed world. Those same people almost comically don't realize that the GA is one of the smallest (in terms of funding) and most irrelevant branches of the UN system. Those same people also don't realize the amount of good done by UN organizations, including the World Food Programme, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), not to mention the World Bank, World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund, and regional economic groups under the purview of the UN.
If you'd like the UN to be disbanded, you should be prepared to argue why all of those organizations, as well as the 18 active UN peacekeeping missions, should be eliminated as well.
If you're willing to do that, I'd love the opportunity to have that discussion. |
