trouble making dark trance
View this Thread in Original format

whenever i make an attempt to make dark or progressive trance it always sounds too happy and or commercial?

could the problem be in the chord progression or the key used?

ive heard if i use longer notes and bring the chord progression down and use synths or timbres that sound more harder this will help let me know.

heres a clip here of what i have now.

dark trance test clip
palm
ur not depressed enough.
Pjotr G
use more minor chords
Subtle
Use alot of Minor Third and Major Second intervals.

And a descending bassline, but you got to have the right atmosphere and sound timbres as well to make it work.
owien
try using distortion and noise samples ect and star from the bottom by making some twisted loops and basslines
palm
also u need a cowbell and a 303
BOOsTER
usually a descending sequence makes for a sad emotion and the other way around...

A G F will sound sad

while F G A will sound quite happy

(possibly I am not sure, I'm just throwing an example)

Dark trance is my choice, I love it. I'm still quite novice so dont take my advice too seriously, but I have listened to a lot of this, and I mean really listened. I think the timbre you have is suitable, but I think there is too much melody there happening too fast. It sounds almost video game like, which is just about always happy. If you listen to your sample it sounds ok at the beginning, with some space between the notes and nothing too complex (like a depressed person), and then it progressively gets happier and happier. I note some real mood changes at about 10 seconds, then 14 ish seconds and again at 19 seconds, and the only thing that is changing is the complexity of the melody.

This is all just my unsubstantiated opinion - good luck!

Dark trance (I guess you mean deep progressive trance) indeed consists of mainly minor chords, they have a sad sound to them.
It's also important that you choose the rights sounds voor progressive, they are mostly filter of at the top (cause to much high will sound happy).

A speaking example is (which I am currently listening ;) ), Cosmic Gate - Not Enough Time (Club Mix), listen to that track really carefully and listen how they did the progressions. Best to learn is to listen to a lot of these tracks.

Actually i realized my problem #1 the bpm was too fast so i slowed that down ,and i gave the riff some room to breathe by giving some space between each hit, also made some of the notes longer .

I also did the same thing for uplifting , i have less notes in the melody and also slowed down the tempo so it does not sound like a circus or a video game .
