Two nuclear submarines have collided in the Atlantic Ocean. The British Navy's HMS Vanguard and the Frency Navy's Le Triomphant both sustained damage but their nuclear power systems and nuclear weapons remain intact.
The two 150 metre vessels are armed with up to 16 missiles with a 48 nuclear warheads. The vessels were carrying approximately 250 sailors in total. At the time of the incident the submarines were on unrelated missions and fully submerged.
The British MoD declined to comment on the submarine incident specifically but a spokesperson confirmed that "the UK's deterrent capability has remained unaffected at all times and there has been no compromise to nuclear safety."
