I dunno whether I'm missing the sample or something, can't find it...
I will take a guess and tell you that the famous flute sound from Enigma is based on the Shakuhachi flute...
every midi bank has it, so do soundfonts and surely there are some samples around :); |

It's a brilliant sound. I know the one you mean, even without the sample - Enigma's trademarks are that shakuhachi sound, that lush, lush pad and that gregorian choir.
The choir was taken directly from this CD, by the way:
Paschale Mysterium
You can listen to audio examples of it here (track 2 is used in Sadeness):

As BOOsTER said, a lot of GM MIDI sets have a shakuhachi sound, as do many samplers, but they're not going to sound like the Enigma one. Does anyone know which synth/sampler Michael Cretu used, or was it a real instrument?
It'd also be nice to know what he used for his pads...I just found some websites and read some interviews...he rates his Roland JV1080 highly...but I couldn't see anything specifically about the shakuhachi or pad... |

Cretu's "flute" is a combination of shakuhachi, flute, panflute, picollo etc...
plus you can add some synth sounds for extra flavour...
I've done something very similar in Reason back in the days of Reason 2.0 :/ too bad I can't find the file anymore :( |

I think its a patch off a Roland jv-1080 or 505 or d2 groovebox!
I was looking at some roland groovebox stuff on you tube and found this!
Give it 1 or 2 mins for the wind pipes! just want it to try to help you out!:D
