Isn't that Jan Johnson - Remember Me?
(Word to the wise on etiquette 'round here: cite your source)
That bass needs to be shelved, drastically. It makes for a very muddy mix.
Her vocals tended to get a little harsh right after she first starts singing and are a little too thin in a lot of other places. There shouldn't, IMO, be a whole lot of adjusting of vocals, unless it's really, really defining the sound of the remix. It just sounded like you were over-using resonance on a band-pass filter and modulating that over a period of time. I'd worry more about getting the instrumentation to fit the vocals before you go tweaking them. As tempting as it might be, save tweaks for one of the last steps before mix-down.
There is a lot of distortion in the tune that's also a little too present.
I like the idea of dropping the instrumentation for an a capella break but the timing on it felt a little awkward.
The verse and bridge ought to have more development opposed to just a pattern that accommodates the melody she's singing. Instruments should follow, but avoid getting in the way of the vocalist's performance.
It's a good foundation but a bit torturous to listen to, at this point.
For a first production, not bad. Don't get me wrong. Play this at a club and you'll split people's ear-drums with some rather nasty harmonics that desperately need to be tamed (I don't know about anyone else, but Jan Johnston is definitely not the last singer I ever want to hear), but... You're demonstrating potential.
Also, you might have a light case of ear fatigue - as indicated by the over-presence of ultra-high frequencies. You might want to turn it down or turn it off, for the day, to give your ears a rest. |
