I was on that party, was really nice, but sometimes Armin droped some boring tracks, Rain Cosmic Gate remix was the best track of teh evening. He played 20 minutes longer. But people were already too tired after 3 hours of him, so last hour was tough test for me, but i passed.:p |

He dropped a boring set if you ask me. Playing the same overplayed stuff for months and months now already. |

We move to Kiev almost 12 hours on bus, so when we came to party, we where already tired, then boring progressive from Jarell (i don't have something against his skills, to say honestly, everybody just waited for Armin, at last track, which played Blake, everybody just screamed "Armin, Armin, Armin". So it was offended to DJ, if everybody just want to get over you sooner and to see next DJ. I said that night, i get much more emotions during Blank & Jones performance a few years ago, than from Armin. Their set was much more energetic, but Armin plaed almost every track with slow moments with vocals, and you standing there and waiting, when beat will start again.
But i and my friends said that came to party alredy tired is a very bad idea. But i'll live soon in better country, and will visit massive parties in own town. After 3 hours we just dancing and thiking of when will he finish his set, but he mixed again and again:D 20 minutes longer than posted in timetable. People really started to leave dancefloor to drink something and rest from 3 hours of dancing.

P.S. I left my girlfriend home and moved to Kiev in the morning of Valentine's Day. She doesn't like that music much. We decided to celebrate it when i came back in the afternoon next day. But our celebration was cancelled when she did something in livingroom and droped my computer on the floor, so all 4 HDDs (1+3*500) were broken. So that Valentine's Day i'll remember for many years!!! |

Blake, is it normal to you, to play just like warm up DJ in country from the other side of the globe? You are a famous producer, your tracks supported by top DJs, so don't you have ambitions to play even with DJ number 1 at the moment, but like individual, original artist, not like shade of Armin??? People feel your mood, your thoughts. And when you thinking playing before Armin, like "Ok, i just have to play a few hours and go rest in the hotel, i know, that everybody come to watch Armin, "nobody" needs me, so i only doing my job, i want to be so popular, but i'm not", then people will think the same, how to kill that time faster to see Armin sooner :rolleyes: You have to think like "Come on, people, it's ME, Armin will be later, but for now join every minute of my awesome set, as for the next 2 hours this is my, Blake Jarell's territory!". Then you can really make people thinking about your music, not only countdown to Armin. Work more on your own name, not on Armin's, like your said :"that's not offending to me, its part of the show." (when people screamed Armin during your set). I entered floor right at the middle of your set, we sitting at the bus almost 12 hours, so i wanted to move, but for me your music was too slow at that moment, that's why i called it boring + you played it like i wrote above. I like some progressive trance/house tracks, for example Moonbeam (awesome guys), but not that night. I would say to you, to work more with posse, you have to entertain them, not only mixing tracks one after each other. Then you'll get real success. Good luck to your career and hope to see you when your set will be part of your own show, not oher's!
Besides, can you help us with the tracklist for your set? I remember last track Energy 52 - Cafe del Mar in some remix, exactly during that track you started to move and join the party, but it was your last track!!! And can you say if your set was recorded? I would like to listen that set at home and compare opinion when i was tired a the party, and relaxed at home. |

I am not a warm up DJ, what I normally play just happens to fit well before Armin. I never play above 128BPM, thats just my style as an artist. I come from more of a progressive house background.

Almost all of my gigs are solo headline gigs or co-headline gigs with guys like Rank 1, Gareth, Menno, etc. I play with Armin maybe one weekend a month. 3/4 of my set was original productions, 1/2 of which aren't released yet (which is the reason why no one can ID the set yet ;). I love playing with Armin, even if people are there for him. I get the chance to play for amazing huge crowds (like 16,000 people in your city) and maybe make a few fans of my own if I'm lucky. Who wouldn't want to do that?

I didn't feel like that at all, I'm not sure why you feel that way. That was the most amount of people I ever played for so I was a little bit nervous, but I had the time of my life and played exactly how I wanted to.

I think maybe you are just confused about my style. What I played that night is the style I normally always play and produce. I think maybe you were expecting 140bpm balls-to-the-wall trance from me and that's just not my style.

You see, you just weren't in the mood for my style, and I can understand that. Alot of people enjoyed the set and there are youtube videos that show it. Of course they didn't react to my set like they do Armin, but that is normal and I'm totally fine with that.

1/2 of the set was tracks from my new remix album coming out in April, so if you recognized any original tracks but not the remix it was probably mine. that cafe del mar remix was the "out of office" remix. I don't really remember exactly what I played or in what order. |

Unfortunately we still don't have your set from that Valentine's Day performance. :( I just remember that Cafe del Mar track. That's why i asked if is there a sense to wait for your recorded set. Thanks, that we came 1 hour later from your begining, so only 5 hours (1 of your set + 4 Armin's) left to dance, otherwise i would fall there down. 5 hours dance nonstop was a little bit hard for me :D Of course slower sets fit to be placed before faster ones, so BPM rise from Dj to Dj. And i'm sure you've got your new fans here;). Plus another one very important thing: sound was very bad setted up there, in the center of the floor hi frequencies vere too high, with massive low frequencies, so middle was in the hide, that was very bad as i coudn't get even some vocals in your tracks. As Armin played more tracks with vocals during pauses, that bad sound settings more harmed your set, than his. Depended on placement on the floor.

Please be a little more active, communicate with public, entertain them, and you'll get response from thousands (only my opinion). At Amsterdam Dance Event - Armada Night - (22-10-2008) were less people???

Not at all, i heard your remixes, have your set from ADE, i like to prepare to parties by listening sets of DJs why will play there, to know what to expect and to create needed mood. I also danced 2.5 hours at Tomcraft performance in our city, he also play slow music, last time more minimal and electro, but we were close to him (like 10 meters), that's why playing in small clubs (300-500 people)much differs from the exposition centers with 10000 people. People see DJ very close and react on every his move, even on smile or view. But there we could see you only on 2 screens at the sides and a little figure of you in the center of stage. Maybe people closer to you good reacted, but far we didn't feel that. That's why i said, try to communicate more with people, especially with people from middle distance, because closer people see you in any case, and from the opposite side from the stage people more relaxing, drinking at the bar, looking for something e.t.c., but exactly middle ready and wants to dance, but don't see you very good if you just stay (at big locations).

People's reaction depends more on DJ rather on music. Repeat like people react on Tomcraft, same slow BPM, but reaction was awesome, he can establish good connection with people. My friend near stage tried to scream title of his old track "Overdose" like asking to play it, Tomas put his hand on ear and showed, that he didn't hear him, but friend screamed again, then Tomas faded out sound at all, heard what friend screamed again, faded in sound again and shaked head like agree with it. Finished his performance with Overdose.

I don't have the recording either, I'm pretty sure it was not recorded.

I believe it to be the exact opposite. This is where we fundamentally disagree unfortunately. While I think crowd interaction is important and adds something to the night, It is not the end-all-be-all of ones career.

Yes, I couldn't really hear 16,000 people requesting songs, much less even see them, from 30 feet in the air and through god knows how many watts of sound.

Thanks Ash, I really would love to come back, especially to play a smaller club with a more intimate vibe. I really enjoyed the event though and the massive ukrainian crowd was fantastic. Hopefully you will give me another chance and enjoy my next set. |
