| Hey guys, im looking to start using a new compressor. im still using T-racks and im convinced its adding slight distortion to the sounds that i dont like. im looking for a compressor that give a nice warm but punchy edge to various elements. has anyone any suggestions for a top compressor capable of bringing out nice overall edges to productions????? |

| both please. im fed up of t racks i dont like its output..i usually use vintage warmer on the master..is there something better than that?? |

For the master I use a chain of compressors and EQ's. Each compressor is only compressing a slight amount, maybe 1-2 db. I find this gives me a nice compressed sound without crushing the track. My master buss chain is as follows:
Linear Phase EQ > UAD Pultec Pro > Sonalksis SV315 > UAD Neve 88RS > PSP Vintage Warmer > Waves L1 Ultramaximizer.
Keep in mind that each of the compressors is only compressing about 1 db and by the time the signal gets to the Ultramaximizer, it is only catching short random peaks. The Ultramaximizer rarely hits 3 db of limiting.
For individual tracks, it depends on what is being compressed. I dont use compression on every track. For kicks I usually use a UAD 1176LN for a bit of added color and distortion, followed by a UAD Neve 88RS with the compressor barely engaging, sometimes a bit of gate and some EQ work. the 1176LN also works well on a drum bus. I usually have all my drums minus the kick and snare going to a bus. For snares, the 1176LN and 88RS work well too, albeit with different settings. The 88RS gate works especially well on snares.
For most of my other sounds, I usually only use the built in Logic compressor. I'll sometimes turn to the Neve 88RS for an individual track, but that is more often in order to use the 88RS EQ section wich sounds fantastic on just about anything. In that case, I'll engage the compressor on the 88RS if I think the track needs compression, but sometimes I'll also put the Logic compressor on the track before the EQ, instead of using the 88RS compressor. |

Vintage warmer is really good.
I have mentioned it before on the forums here only to get beaten down by some people for using what they consider to be better suited to live instruments but to be honest, it sounds pretty darn good in my ears and I can always find a way to use it.
But, if you are getting distortion in T-Racks then I would consider checking for clipping as T-Racks is perfectly suited for giving quality results.
What you might want to try is this...
Something that can make tracks distort is too much limiting. Sometimes it's better to stick two instances of the same limiter on the master buss and have them working at half the intensity. Can sometimes acheive the loudness you wont and get rid of distortion.
Might also want to revisit the db that you are bouncing your track out at prior to mastering.
