So I suspect that I'm not the only one currently under the weather. Pounding headache, clogged up sinuses, very sore throat (finally seems to be going away), achy body parts, and weak as sin. I haven't been sick like this in about two years I'd say :(

Anyone else?

we share the exact same symptoms
add in a nasty sunburn - which feels like im constantly on fire

I usually take echanasia to cut down the days that a cold wages it's war on my immune system. Anyone else find that helps? I'm trying a new cold medicine tonight though, it's called Fuzion. It's a shiraz from argentina.

Echinacea is definitely a big help. Always good to pump yourself full of vitamin C for that added immune boost. All you can do with a cold, sadly, is treat the symptoms and let it run it's course. Stay hydrated and ibuprofen is your friend. :)

I took some this morning on a whim to do 'something' and yeah, it helped a lot, actually. I picked up some advil cold and sinus after that. Neo Citrin will guarentee a great sleep tonight!

ummm its not the cold that gets you sick...its bacteria...the flu and the common cold are caused by viruses. People get sick more often in the winter because they are exposed to each other more in the winter than in the summer. When it is cold outside, people tend to stay inside and are more likely to spread germs to one another. In tropical areas, where it does not get cold, the common cold and flu season generally occurs during the rainy season. But again, these illnesses are not caused by the rain. They are just more prevalent because people come in closer contact with each other than they do during the dry season.

I run around outside in my underwear in the middle of winter and I never get sick.

Well, if you're talking solely about the flu virus, then that theory is false.

the flu virus is more stable in colder temperatures, that's the real issue here.

I think so, ya.

When I was working at the UW Bookstore, this one lady working at the coffee shop in it would always mother me :) and "make" me drink this echinacea tea daily!

I think i noticed that it had an effect. It was good too. :gsmile:

Wow, TA is the worst place on the planet for medical advice.

Vitamin C is believed by many to help improve immunity to colds and other viruses, but it has never been scientifically proven.

Echinacea is a placebo. Period. Worse, a lot of people are mildly allergic, so it can actually make your symptoms more severe.

Multivitamins (if you don't eat healthy, which most people don't) and regular exercise will both help to boost your overall immune system. Persistent stress and exposure to cold weather both hinder it. All of these things may affect how likely you are to get sick but none of them will actually cause or prevent illness.

The best way to prevent an infection is to wash your hands. But viruses (colds and flu) are NOT bacteria, so don't bother with the antibacterial soap, it is the mechanical action of hand-washing that kills them or just removes them from your skin. Purell is not a substitute.

Finally, the main reason people get sicker in the winter is that constantly moving in and out of doors causes everyone to cough and their noses to run; combine all of that mucus with a little poor hygiene and it is literally a breeding ground for hostile germs. Also, as mentioned, some viruses do survive longer in the cold.

It's no wonder that illnesses spread so fast with so much superstition going around. I thought the middle ages were over.
